A slightly related question, as I wasn't here at the time - that's where the outdoor escalator used to be yes? What was up there?

I've often wondered this. All I've found is that it originally was a link between the Richmond's balcony and an outdoor terrace restaurant attached to the department store (Cox-Foy's operated by Harris Scarfe until 1977 so was it still there when the escalators went in?). All the photos I've found only ever show the Richmond side for some reason.

The bridge was built after Cox-Foy's had left because the building then underwent a major external facelift (this is when the lifts were put on the outside, etc). Prior to this, the building was quite normal externally, elevators were internal at the back of the building. There are some photos archived at the State Library which you can view on-line.

Interesting - I always presumed it was an 80s building.

I couldn't find anything in the State Library archives (not sure what you'd search for here as Cox-Foy or 127 Rundle Mall etc yield no results) but there are a couple of images thrown up by Google:

Apparently there was a fairground on the roof:

Yes it was the original Dazzeland.

Al lot of Adelaide's grand buildings (and some not so grand) used to be department stores.

There was never a cinema in Parc Arcade... Don't know where you heard that.
Yes there was actually because I can remember going there when I was a kid.

It used to be downstairs, it was the old Hoyts Midcity. You used to go down the stairs, the ticket box was at the bottom of the stairs and the cinema was on the left.

From memory it closed around 83 or 84 I am guessing when Regent 2 and 3 opened in Regent Arcade.

I think either Lindcraft or Spotlight or someone like that moved down there during the late 80s and where the Midcity used to be was just closed off.

I don't ever remember anyone ever being where the cinema used to be so I wouldn't be surprised if it is still there.

Never say never. ;) This is why I said "rumoured". Several people who worked for the council independently told me of its existence. I once had a key to the gates. But it was very much out of bounds due to complete darkness and whatever lives down there now, so I never used it. I asked me ol' dad and he seemed to recall one. But I suspect he's confused with the York. So I can neither confirm or disprove its existence.
As I posted above, I can 100 percent confirm that there was a cinema there because I went there when I was a kid.

Used to be downstairs on Stephens Place, closed around 83 or 84. I can actually remember that the last movie they ever showed was To Be Or Not To Be which starred Mel Brooks because I remember my brother going to see it because it was the final movie that was going to be shown there.

From memory It was only ever a small cinema so I think it might have shown movies that were at the at the end of the theatrical run.

After it closed I am pretty sure that it was just boarded up and I remember a Lindcraft or Spotlight type store moved into the lower level, but they were on the right and the left side where the cinema was I think was just boarded up and never used.

I wonder if anyone can locate any pictures of this mysterious cinema? Obviously it existed but it would be interesting to see some photos.

A quick search on the Internet suggests it was a venue for the 1978 and 1979
Adelaide International Film Festivals, but that's about all I could find.

My interest has been piqued.

Yep I have often wondered whether it was still there or not and wish that someone had some photos of how it looked back then. I have tried a few times to search for something online, but have never had any luck.

All I can remember about the cinema was that the ticket box was outisde the cinema and was directly at bottom of the stairs on Stephens Place and the cinema was to the left.

Not sure whether I went there more than once, but the one time I do vividly remember going there was to see Super Snooper in the early 80s with my mum and brother.

I went down there a couple of times in the late 80s when the textiles store was there (I think it was Lindcraft), but they never moved into the area where the cinema was and it was just bordered off with white paneling and I definitely don't remember anything ever moving into that space, so that's why I tend to believe the rumours that it's still intact down there.

Can we move the talk of cinemas from the 70's to the pub? Thanks
