Good news in relation to train patronage, especially on the Seaford line. There was an increase of more than 75% in patronage.
Train patronage
-2014/15 - 13,115,666
-2013/14 – 10,388,830 (includes period of line closures on Seaford and Belair lines)
-2009/10 – 10,702,267 (previous high)

Imagine what those stats would be like if they electrified the Gawler line.

I bet a large % of these additional trips were to/from Adelaide Oval, as opposed to commuting.
Good to see. The spin-off benefits of the AO redevelopment keep coming.

Those figures do not include 8mil free trips recorded. Those free trips include the Adelaide Oval event trips. So we can't attribute those all.

Thanks for this clarification, Mono.
But Wayno's on the money about the likely spinoff benefits of AO redevelopment.
How many people had never caught PT before the 'free' trips to AO for footy, Tests, Big Bash, Rolling Stones /others concerts/events, Soccer mega matches etc etc.?
It exposes the benefits of using PT, including ease of access, hassle free (no need to find parking), cost.
And the Footbridge continues to show its worth, not only for the ready access, but the colourful lighting, banners/balloons etc contribute to the atmosphere and vibe of the precinct.
Even a modest shift in thinking as a result of the trips (free or otherwise) - catch the train, leave the car at home - will assist increased overall patronage statistics. Just need to capitalize on this with ever improving PT, schedules etc.

I agree, I hope this is an election issue.
budget surpluses in this state are of no value in the current climate.
Get it done I say!

Don't forget to throw in the safety factor - how many punters down multiple drinks at these events - and in the past, drove home? It is so relaxing at these events if things are going well to be able to say "yep - I'll have another" and know that you can safely get home.

The Gawler Line electrification works should be starting before the next election regardless

It is good news indeed.
The line was extended to cover a lot more area. If catchment area was increased yet patronage shrunk there would need to be something going horribly wrong.

'Should'...idealistically, or realistically?

Realistically. The money is budgeted for 2017/18, with the election in March 2018, but you would hope that as soon as the department has the funds they would get started on this.

The Gawler electrification should happen ASAP - but isn't there only about 5 extra 4000 class trains? Another 20 or so would need to be purchased.

There are 70 3000-class trains and 66 4000-class trains (which form 22 sets). That's an increase of 37 cars from our previous mix of 2000-class and 3000-class trains. I don't think there is an immediate need for more trains at this stage.

Norm, you've clearly bought into the Government's spin.
We really have 22 new trains as the 4000 class must be a 3 - carriage set. They cannot be decoupled from one another. There has to be an A, B and T carriage in order for the train as a whole to work.
So, we actually need to be buying another 22 (66) trains for the Gawler line.
