I hope it ends up looking lke a smaller/lower version of Central Park in NY - it's well on the way!

Hmmmmmmmmmmm

A much smaller version than Central Park, I would think. As a matter of fact, er a midget version.

The best thing we can for squares in Adelaide do is to fix Victoria square into a decent public area, the other 4 squares are too small to do much with.

Still, I used to work in Hindmarsh sq and it's a nice part of the city, so hopefull will be even better in a year from now.

Me too! It seems to have come on the radar very quickly from being an unnoticed, insignificant backblock section of Adelaide. Projected image will look very attractive. Would be great with a tramline down Grenfell to East Tce. Much more appealing that current VSQ.

i think what makes it so attractive to pedestrian activity, etc. is the fact that it isnt surrounded by roads (the northern quadrants at least), unlike the other squares, especially victoria square.

Even though it's cut twice by Pulteney and Grenfell streets and a quarter of it is taken with two car parks?

yea, well i did say the two northern quadrants, which are always a hive for activity. the redeveloped playground is always packed as well as the side adjacent to the old academy theater site.

It is an interesting point though. Would we be better served by more pocket parks, rather than the large squares?

The problem with our squares is not the size but their disconnection from the adjacent buildings. The most used parts of each of our squares are where the squares are directly connected to commercial buildings. If we removed the parking and Pirie st from the western side of Hindmarsh Sq by the time Aurora and the Conservatory are finished we would have a very active and vibrant square.

Unfortunately the buildings on the east side are not at ground level so will always remain disconnected from the square.

I have been told that the council intends to reclaim about 50% of the western access road of the square - adjacent to the Conservatory
building. This would increase the size of the park area and ensure that the road will only be one-way. This will probably be the
case for the eastern access road as well. Will it actually happen - who knows ? Would be a positive initiative i believe.

That would be a good start. Hopefully they will increase the width of the western footpath as well as the park area to allow extra outdoor cafe seating.

Just had confirmation:
The crane is due for installation on 7 June 2008 and should remain on site until 23 May 2009.

The crane is a Favco 380.

I don;t know much about cranes...Is this the sort of crane being used at the Gallery?

The foundations for the crane have been poured at the NE corner of the site, part way out into the Pirie Steet footpath.

The foundations and retaining walls are pretty well underway but still a lot of dirt to move before any structural work can start. Great to see how fast this one is moving ahead.
