Is the old store still open?
I thought it was staying open until the new one opened but from those photos it looks like the carpark has been completely dug up and with the fencing all around it and part of the roof missing it doesn't exactly look welcoming!

The old store has been demolished today. It no longer exists. Apparently it will be 1 month
until the new store opens.

More from today, lots of pics!
Looks like the older one is nearly gone! I remember going there a few times and having hotcakes for breakfast!

This has to be the most extensive coverage of a McDonald's anyone has ever recorded.

Excellent demolition photos!
I have to say I'm surprised they've demolished it already. I thought the whole point of building the new one next to the existing one (rather than on the same site exactly) was that they could keep the old one open until the new one was complete.
Anyway there you go. They must have their reasons!

With the way that they've designed the new store it was not possible to keep the old store open. This is duepushbutton wrote:Excellent demolition photos!

to the fact that with the new store people drive in from North East road and they will drive over the area
where the old store is and into the drive thru and then exit on to Reservoir road. It will mean that it will be easier for
people driving along NE road to access the store. This should be better for there business as NE road is pretty busy.
That's how I see it working anyway.
When I first found out that Mcdonalds was building a whole new store right next to an existing store I could not work
it out. Why the would the owners pay for the cost of a new store when they already have a good existing business ?
Obviously they believe that the exta patronage which they will receive as a result of this new setup will be enough to
justify the expense of building new store.

It was probably the most out of date McDonalds in Adelaide and whilst they could have modernised it I support they found it would end up costing nearly as much as demolishing and starting again and still probably wouldn't quite be as good, so demolish and start again is what they've done.
What I found much more surprising was that in England there was a brand new McDonalds built in 2002 at MiddleBrook retail park near the Reebok stadium in Bolton. It was built to the "old style" McDonalds's design but was modern inside and perfectly fine outside (but to the old design with the black roof, with white stripes).
In 2006 they demolished that store and built a new one on the same site, which is built to the new contemporary style.
That means the 2002 one only lasted about 4, or at most 5 years from newly built to demolished.
Seems like a big waste of money but obviously they decided it was the most profitable thing to do!

Perhaps there's a clause in the franchise agreement that the store has to be upgraded/kept up to its new look every x years?
[U/C] Re: #ONH: Tea Tree Plaza Upgrade | $190m | 108,269sqm
The outside of the store was older but do people really care about that ?
There's still plenty of other older stores around. I think they decided to
build the new store because they think they'll get more business as a result
of the new drive thru setup.

The original proposal was for the drive-through to be facing into the carpark I think. I'd say the main reason they've gone for a completely new store is that whilst there are a lot of old-style stores around that have been modernised, the modernisation involves a partial recladding of some parts of the exterior walls, which might have been hard to do with those stone faced walls the old store at TTP had.
I dare say it was possible to make it look modern, but the extra hassle of working around that stone look would probably have made it cost almost as much, maybe even more than demolition and rebuilding.
As for whether people care about how the store looks externally, well yes I do. As a customer I am more attracted to stores that look modern, fresh, clean, bright etc. and therefore I'm more likely to want to patronise such places.

Hungry Jacks up the road at Pelican Plaza is closed now. I guess they have been forced to upgrade with the Maccas upgrade.
The workers seem to be in there all day and night. The place was being stripped out at 11pm last night.

The KFC outside of Modbury Triangle should be modernised too!
