I don't think the Melbourne system has been extended in recent years except for the Docklands area. Happy to be corrected on that.

Just for the record, that was a tongue-in-cheek reply
That's the firstof two reasons.

The second is that with the various anti corruption watchdogs in NSW, it is harder to send your mates money. So what you do is set up public private partnerships that are so big that only one or two companies (wink wink nudge nudge) can tender for.

They design something that is way gold plated, way over priced, way over financed, and hey presto, big profits for a small group of contractors and financiers. All legal. What's not to like? :2cents: :2cents: :2cents:

Of course, for the $1.6bn that the Sydney single line will cost, they could have had a whole system. :sly:

The Melbourne thing is essential though because it makes sure the punters don't realise what's going on.

There's been a few short extensions around parts of the network and upgrades to some key junctions as well, but no major extensions.

Melbourne Metro rail tunnel looks like it will be kicking in to gear soon with the announcement of the compulsory property acquisitions earlier today.

Melbourne has great skills in rebuilds and maintenance, but the skills are all controlled within a single company - Yarra Trams, which may push up the price of accessing those skills. Many of the rebuilds in the CBD have been completed over a weekend. A few years ago there was a sped up video of rebuilding the Spring St/Collins St intersection. The old concrete was removed, track for a new intersection installed and new concrete laid between Friday night and Monday morning.

One night in Swanston St I watched while a broken rail was welded by the Yarra Trams mobile repair crew. A few seconds after the welder had finished a tram was let through, then he started angle grinding it down to a smooth finish ready for the next tram. There was no need for an occupation without trams or other traffic - just people who have become skilled at their jobs.

Does anyone know whether Adelaide Metro now has enough train sets to run 30 minute services at night on the Seaford and Gawler lines ?
I believe the A-City train order is now complete (according to the scribes on Railpage)

They sure do! Whether they have the budget to run them is another matter...

The screens displaying the train schedules also seem newer and bigger.

Those screens looks impressive. Wonder what will they be used for - schedules, ads, footage of Adelaide landmark?

Back in the late 80's early 90's in suburban Liverpool UK they discovered a cure for graffitti. 2 teenage boys were caught graffitting a suburban station.
They and their father were sentenced by the court to buy their own standard paint and repaint ( every Saturday) any graffitti that appeared on that station for the next 12 months.

They look great, it's just too bad the rest of the platform areas look run down.

They were playing SA Tourism videos the last couple of times I walked past them - it certainly brightens the place up, makes it look a little more up-to-date.

They really should have at least poster advertising at our major train stations to generate more revenue and maybe even fund extra night services.
