There is no doubt that section of Hindley Street will see some major development in years to come, being so close to the medical precinct.

Regarding the bitumen, it was probably all they could pump out of the limited budget they had. Regarding the extension to West Terrace, probably not at this stage as that area is a lot less used than the other side. Hopefully in a few years though.

A cursory google didnt yield any results, but there's currently some work being done on Mellor Street - last few weeks have seen the installation of two small garden beds on the western side of the road (at the expense of two car parks - dont tell ghs!) which appear to be in a similar style to hose installed further west along waymouth. The work is now extending around the corner to the front of (the now closed) atlantis bar on waymouth although i cant tell yet what they're actually doing there.

Furthermore - Gresham Place has been given a makeover including new lighting, fully paved which has allowed it to be permanently closed off to traffic. It's in conjunction with the redevelopment of the first two floors of 1 KWS, which IMO looks brilliant. Stands out prominently in such a key location.

Slowly but surely the city streets and laneways are becoming much more interesting and attractive places to be. Just need alot more green foliage in the city.

Can I ask, the beautification and up keep of city parks, median strips etc, is this expensive? Coming from the Gold Coast, I've noticed Adelaide really lets these areas fall apart once there has been an upgrade. And often these upgrades look half arsed at best and dead or tired after a few months with no up keep. The city is in winter and should be so green but all I see are weeded beds all over the burbs and little greenery in the city itself.

We have such a quaint, pretty little city, these touches, though they may be costly, would certainly add that extra punch the city needs re beautification.

What I do love about the laneways and the city as a whole is this eclectic mix of architecture we have. Old mixed in with the new. Even in the inner burns and main roads, I like seeing modern apartment blocks against the old commercial or industrial warehouses. Perhaps something to consider when evolving the city and making it denser in the years to come? A place like the GOld Coast or even Brisbane lacks a lot of this as so much of the cities are new. I guess having been away for so long, you notice these things.

70,000 is far too many.

In a few years time if the topham mall car park and cafes complain that they've lost business as a result of the one way street will the council then waste more money by reverting bentham street back to a two way ?

Adelaide City Council owns the topham mall car park?

Tenants in the mall itself would be absolutely ecstatic about the development of an activated space leading through from the riverbank to the central markets. Given the frequent vacancies and general quality of tenancies there, im left with the impression that people who park there dont make a significant contribution to the precinct's economy. That's the funny thing about people who drive to work - they contribute nothing to the city but more traffic and then demand their needs outweigh those of any other group.

How about the right hand turn on grote street reversal debacle ? Can you explain that ?

Easily. A weak lord mayor and a bunch of pro-landlord, pro-car, pro-parking Councillors got elected, tore up the Smart Move Strategy 4 years into its 10 year life cycle and implemented an "interim action plan" designed to "restore balance" based on their gut feel about "perception" issues.

ACC are indeed a joke, but for different reasons than what you point out. The only reason the riverbank-market link is looking good is because Renewal SA is driving it.

I hope they remove every single car park from Pitt Street as it moves further south.

Feelpinions are a very bad way to govern. It leads to councillors wasting money commissioning report after report because the results of the first few reports dont mesh with the aforementioned gut feels. hence the sheer number of reports that exist on the frome Street bikeway. We've become so car-focussed in Adelaide that some Crs on the ACC cant see how or why other cities(like vancouver - which has a much wetter climate than us) adding miles of protected bike lanes has made their cities better for all including motorists.

What really lets this project down are the hideous buildings and shopfronts on both sides of Bank St. The motel building especially needs to be gutted or blown up.

Hopefully the semi-pedestrianisation of these streets will be a catalyst for the redevelopment of many of these shop fronts.

Still quite like the Hindley Street facade of the motel but agree the site could be put to better use.

The problem with the building is the air conditioners at the motel. They seem to very old and throw a lot of condensation onto the footpath in summer. Hopefully those units can be replaced.
