TIMEFRAMES AND STAGING OF WORKS
• Construction activities started in July 2007 and are scheduled for completion by the end of 2009.
• Construction works will take place in three stages:
Stage 1: (July 2007 – Mid 2008).
Stage 2: (Mid 2008 – Mid 2009).
Stage 3: (Mid 2009 - End 2009).

STAGE 1 WORKS INCLUDE
• erection of a site office on South Road between Mortimer and Basnett Streets, Kurralta Park; building the
southern half of the 36m wide bridge deck;
• installation of noise walls and other treatments to occur in parallel with construction at each stage;
• during the same period new culverts (required to further to reduce the risk of flooding) will be placed under South
Road at Brown Hill Creek and minor storm water drainage along ANZAC Highway will be upgraded;
• excavation work on South Road on both sides of the underpass to create a ‘drive through’;
• other works commencing in this period will include a new north bound entry ramp, southern underpass
earthworks and barrier placement, and common services trenching enabling the relocation of existing Service
Authority infrastructure.

STAGE 1 TEMPORARY ROAD CLOSURES
• Temporary road closures will be implemented at times to increase safety for the general public and workers while
works are in progress and to deter vehicles from using side streets to avoid the intersection, thereby minimising
disturbance to local residents.
• In the first stage of construction, the north-west quadrant will experience temporary long term road closures in
Mortimer and Basnett Streets and Garfield Avenue. These are expected to be implemented progressively from
late September for a period of approximately 6 months.

STAGE 2 WORKS
• Key activities during Stage 2 will include:
- building the northern side of the bridge deck;
- stitching the two halves of the bridge deck together to form the ANZAC Highway ‘at grade’ bridge; and
- excavation of South Road from the northern side to complete the underpass.
• By the end of stage 2, motorists will be driving through the new underpass although not fully complete.

STAGE 3 WORKS
With the upgraded South Road on a new alignment by mid 2009, all that will be left to do during this stage will be a
makeover of South Road and surrounding areas of the intersection. These works will include:
• landscaping, including tree planting;
• completion of paving and kerbing; and
• installation of all final urban design features such as memorial plaques, feature lighting and other treatments.



So basically by mid 2009 we can use the underpass....and by end of 2009 it will be fully done.

Thanks for the link, and the notice is in today's Advertiser, p54, with Anzac Highway diverted to the north from end of November to allow the installation of the southern section of bridge deck.

don't take the scheduled times as gospel, It might not be finished until mid 2010 given the performance of other projects lately.

That's a wonderful addition to Wikipedia. I'm still gobsmacked by the scale of some of the freeway proposals, notably the Hindmarsh Interchange. Hard to believe that the whole suburb would have been razed to oblivion and been an en masse of concrete 8 lanes wide and ramps going every which way....

The main part. Look it up on the computers, place a request, and they'll leave it out for you in about half an hour. It's an easy process, and an excellent read!

A facinating read. I had heard bits and pieces about the MATS proposal but didn't know the full story. It certainly shows how unimaginative and conservative the successive state governments have become

There's also a copy of the MATS plan proposal at the Flinders University Library, you don't need to order it, it's just sitting on the shelves, along with other doomed projects, such as Monarto and the MFP (Multi Function Polis) (all coincidentally alongside each other ).. which all make for a very interesting read (if at the time you were looking to procrastinate instead of study )

Whereabouts is it? As in, what floor and what side.

It makes you wounder what Adelaide would have looked like today if the MATS project went ahead, very interesting.
We may however not be the city we are today?
We may have lost some very special suburbs that give us our unique character and life style today.
As the artical said it may have also created ghettos in the inner city because houses would devalue due to a freeway above you.
Also i found it interesting that some parts of Mats went ahead, eg the southern expressway, south eastern freeway, the port river expressway, Sailsbury highway/ northern expressway. So all was not lost.
As for our history of rejected projects such as the MFP & Monarto, If you really want to consider our present sitution both of these projects may still happen (eg Mawson lakes & Port redevelopment come close.)

The bottom line is we've still progressed with some of these ideas that may not necessarily have been a bad thing, as for the future i think Adelaide will become the tunnel building expert of Australia one day, that i think is the way to go.
1) It looks more attractive than spagetti freeways in the inner city ( ok for the fringes)
2) Adelaides character and original design won't be comprimised.
3) It will look modern and futuristc and be unique to this city and won't look like every other city.
