They did. But it took several years to wind up in each case. Similarly with WA Webb. You just can't wink the expertise into existence overnight. However, even in these cases, there was a basic public sector expertise to be able to build up from. We.Don't.Have.That.Anymore.

We have a taxi driver for a treasurer,who replaced a guy who barely passed high school and a non existent opposition.

He drove taxis to put him self through university. He also stepped up to run the family business.

Who do you want as treasurer? A millionaire out of touch with the majority of society? Maybe then our state treasurer can give the big end of town tax cuts just like the federal government has done?

It's more than just SA. The Sydney "Light Rail" is a complete cluster **** already. Per kM it is now the most expensive light rail in the world. Wheeeee! And it will almost certainly be slower than the old trams they got rid of in 1961. How's that for progress? Looked at like that, SA is actually doing all right...compared to Sydney. WA's trains are better, but the WA Government is broke.

Labor’s electrification pledge would put Gawler train line back on track a year earlier than planned

ELECTRIFICATION of the Gawler train line could begin this year, Labor will announce on Friday.

If elected into Government, Federal opposition transport spokesman Anthony Albanese says Labor would reverse the shock $76 million cut to the project, ensuring it can start a year earlier than planned.

The Gawler Line electrification is top of Infrastructure Australia’s state priority list, but the State Government needs Federal help to get it started. Labor’s commitment has prompted a call for the Federal Coalition to match it.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has indicated that the Coalition would also be willing to kick in for the projects, even though it was his Government that made the original cut.

“The electrification of the Gawler rail line could begin by the end of this year after the Federal Labor Party promised to reinstate funding cut by the Coalition Government,” he said.

“We now call on the Federal Coalition to match the Federal Labor Party’s pledge to electrify the Gawler rail line so that residents of Adelaide’s northern suburbs can reap the benefits of a modern and efficient train network.”

Last year Mr Turnbull was asked if he would restore the funding, and he emphasised the shift between his Government — which is in favour of public transport — and the Government under Tony Abbott — which was focused on freight and highways.

A federal government of whatever persuasion can put in its share today, and it will still not get underway unless the state commits to its share. This money has been on the table previously, but if the state dithers, the money is lost to the next East coast flood emergency, or whatever. We can only hope that once the feds stump up AGAIN-the state grabs the money and runs.

That's good news - but I wonder if that means they're ahead of schedule so don't need to close the line to work on it for an extended period, or if they're behind schedule so aren't ready to undertake the works they had planned for that period?

The Adelaide Metro website says "works are progressing well" but that could mean anything.

Presumably in the near future they're going to swing the lines out towards the edges of the corridor so that they can construct the overpass down the middle where the lines currently run. They appear to have started groundworks for this (have excavated and laid concrete) - I wonder when this is due to occur? Presumably they'll also need to make some changes to the South Road level crossing to move the boom gates further apart to accommodate the lines.

Also, I'll be interested to see how the construction of the overpass progresses - even with the tracks moved to the edges of the corridor it's still going to be a very narrow area for construction to take place - not to mention being bound on two sides by active rail lines...
