No, as you can see it is. Plus the veranda... hang on I'll go downstairs and take a photo...Ben wrote:This is the best I could find on the net. As you can see it's not like that historical facade anymore.

You're all right depending on which part of the building you choose to look at. Above the verandah the historical facade is still intact. Below the verandah it has been butchered.
The facade would still come up well if the upper part was restored and the lower part remodeled. The quality of the design for the replacement building will determine whether I support the demolition. (Then again the developer probably couldn't give a rats arse whether I support the demolition or not).

The bottom section is not the same as it once was. I have never seen those square tiles above the windows in my lifetime which is why I assume an "upgrade" was done in the 70s.Will wrote:

The square tiles are actually ripple glass. The first floor masonry wall is supported on columns set back from the front facade. The entire ground floor facade btwn floor and ceiling level is a curtain glass wall.Ben wrote:Will wrote: The bottom section is not the same as it once was. Sounds interesting. Who are the developers?

They spent a bit of money on the facade and the paint job, if you look inside or from an angle you can see how shitty it really is.crawf wrote:I don't mind the look of that carpark tbh.
Technology has failed me, my camera wont send to blogger.com or email or any of the places it's supposed to... humph. I'll upload the pic later.

Someone please reassure me that Laubman and Pank on Gawler is nothing to do with this - From the rest of the thread, I don't think it is, but I am hopeless with street numbers, until I see a map I have no idealoud wrote:I wonder if this development could be modified to take in the three buildings on Gawler Place that have been up for sale for ages now: Laubman & Pank, Allans Music & Gritti Palace...

I thought a inner fitout would do the trick, but if they're building a new building alltogether... fantastic!
[COM] Re: #Proposed: 79-91 Rundle Mall, 19 Storey Office and Retail
Just to highlight the locations and adresses of the sites in question:
I am under the impression that the 4 retail levels will be built in place of 81-91 Rundle Mall rising to the height of the heritage building. I'd imagine the U-Park would be retained & restructured to accomodate the rooftop carpark. I would surely expect that the 14 level office tower would be located at 90 Grenfell Street, and that a new laneway be built in place of 79 Rundle Mall to connect with the existing laneway that runs east of Francis Street to accomodate for deliveries and the such. Makes logical sense.

Interesting news, it seems the owners have similar intentions to what Joe Emanuele had years ago before he went bankrupt. I recall Joe was looking at something in the region of 25 storeys. This is a big block, very ripe for redevelopment. Let's hope it will have some class and not a repetition of the REMM (Myer) debacle.

Thanks for the aerial shot/map Shuz - puts my mind at ease about the Gawler Street impact (i.e. none) - i really love that Laubman & Pank building. Adelaide Arcade looks great from above, never really noticed that before.
The Grenfell Street frontage is pretty nice from the verandah up. Wouldn't be chaining myself to that one though, they've knocked down much more beautiful buildings in Adelaide before now.
