Updates:
During the past weekend nights, major destruction of the bridge section over the railway had taken place with no major dramas.
Everything is coming along the way now, with more sections of the bridge about to be removed this week and for the next few weeks to come.

This was what happened throughout last week.
The section above the railway is almost completely demolished
over the weekend, the demolition of the second section above the railways are now done, the cleaning up process is being undertaken
Now, 3/4 of the old Bakewell Bridge is now gone, and the hardest and most complicated sections of the demolition is now over.
I am expecting to see the whole bridge gone by the end of this month, hopefully.

Sorry to ask a stupid question but what is the story behind this bridge demolition and underpass?

The bridge is old and is considered unsafe by modern standards. It's was built during an era when the large trucks and trains that passed under or over it could be handled safely.
Things have changed since then. Trucks have gotten taller and larger, as have trains, particularly freight trains. In recent years, many vehicles, both rail and road have been involved in incidents, particularly being caught under the bridge as it has a low clearance height. The bridge is also aging structurally as well, so now is a good time to replace it.
This isn't the first time a bridge over the rail lines between Adelaide and Goodwood has been replaced. The Hilton Bridges replaced an old two lane wooden bridge that carried what was then Burbridge Road into the city during the late 1980s. In around 1993, the Port Road bridges were reconstructed as part of the Port Road upgrade at Thebarton. The only one that hasn't been replaced is the one carrying Greenhill and Richmond Roads and Anzac Highway over the rail lines at Keswick, being built during the 1930s. Before any of the other bridges were replaced, this was the youngest AFAIK.

I passed through the construction site yesterday. The whole bridge is gone now from what I could see, and East Terrace has been rerouted around where the new East Terrace bridge will be built across the new underpass. Excavation for the underpass on the Mile End side of the site has begun.

On the city side of the underpass, they have already dug down quite alot.. sides have also been formed also it would look like pillars of some sort have been sunken in between the railway.
