In reply to Daviddon: yes there was a large tree at the end of Frome St just south of Carrington St but this was removed 15-20 years ago. It was near the Jam factory.

Part of the Plan to widen Frome St included the idea that Glen Osmond Rd would be realigned in the park lands to meet Frome St at South Terrace and not continue on towards Pulteny St .
Christian Brothers College, on the north eastern side of Frome St /Wakefield St knocked down their original building (built in 1878) in 1963 to widen Frome Street. At this time Frome St was called Ackland St.

Karidis need to lift their game. This is bog standard old-Adelaide development. It's the kind of building that we'll all be campaigning to have demolished on this forum in 20 years time...

This is concerning...
Developer buys heritage-listed Crown and Anchor Hotel
http://indaily.com.au/news/local/2016/1 ... hor-hotel/

A property developer has bought Crown and Anchor Hotel on Grenfell Street - established 1853 - three years after securing approval to build a 13-storey apartment building next door.

InDaily can reveal that South Australian developer Karidis Corporation has purchased the local heritage-listed hotel, situated on the corner of Grenfell Street and Union Street in the East End.

Kevin Gregg and Greg Fahey, who had owned the Crown and Anchor for more than five years, sold the property to Karidis in September after being approached by the developer.

Gregg, who owns Rundle Street’s Exeter Hotel, confirmed the sale after being approached by InDaily.

He indicated the potential long-term impact of apartments being built next to the pub – which has a reputation for live music – was part of the pair’s reasoning for selling the business.

Stressing he wasn’t negative about the sale, Gregg told InDaily: “We knew the land alongside us was going to be developed anyway and we thought it was an opportune time to sell it to Gerry [Karidis]”.

“It has always been made clear to us that apartments are going to be built on that vacant site – ultimately – and we obviously had that in mind when we sold.”

A spokesperson for Karidis Corporation confirmed the purchase, but declined to reveal any plans for the future of the hotel.

City councillor and heritage architect Sandy Wilkinson told InDaily the building was given heritage listing in 1991, and that “when buildings are listed, they’re listed for all time, for future generations”, adding that it would be “unthinkable” were the building to be demolished.

“It’s a very popular, attractive landmark corner pub building, that plenty of people love,” he said, adding that the purchase was “bleak news” for the Victorian pub.

He said if the developer did attempt to redevelop the site “it sets an incredibly dangerous precedent” for other buildings in the CBD.

In 2013, the Development Assessment Commission approved the developer’s plans for an apartment complex on the land adjacent the Crown and Anchor Hotel, where small bars Crab Shack and Little Miss Dive Shop currently stand.

Those bars were closed earlier this year.

The project is reportedly worth $50 million and will include apartments, retail tenancies and office space.

Karidis said in late 2014 that he had postponed demolition to begin the project due to “the state of the economy”.

You would have to assume it won't be allowed to be demolished but it may be incorporated into a future development.

That’s devastating f*cking news.

a) because the Cranker’s one of the last true pubs with anything resembling an atmosphere in the City

and

b) it’s the second time in two weeks that I’ve agreed with Sandy Wilkinson

Would be a huge blow to the local live music /pub scene.

Though this snippet from the tiser might relieve some people...
In 2013, Mr Karidis said his business would support the Crown and Anchor.

He said soundproof glass would prevent any noise issues with the pub.

“We are very supportive of the pub and every business in the area,” he said.

After it has been gutted and turned into a carbon copy of the *insert name of any one of the vaguely acceptable but utterly soulless bistro and pokies pubs in the CBD or suburbs which have been redeveloped by rich middle-aged men over the past 20 years*.

Current theory I'm running with...

Karidis has no intention of proceeding with his boring-as-batshit development. He said in 2014 the project was on ice due to market conditions and unless I'm missing something all that has changed since then is a boatload of additional capacity coming online and the SA economy further underperforming. Buys the Cranker for a steal because the owners are keen to get out and parcels it up with his existing site, which has a development approval, to increase the overall value, and flog it off to someone else.

What this all means for the pub I don't know, but it's difficult to picture anything happening on this block any time soon.

Looks like Roxie’s days are numbered and possibly Crown and Anchor?

These guys built the student accom behind the ed on Currie so I’m not expecting an architectural masterpiece but hope I’m wrong.

Honestly, this should be blocked on the principal that it’s a culturally significant area. Whatever one’s interpretation of ‘culture’ is, the Cranker is one of a very few venues still able to provide a band room for a lot of emerging acts coming out of Adelaide, to lose or so much as compromise that would show just how disingenuous our claim of being the ‘Festival State’ with a big Arts focus is. Just look at the outcome of the Hotel Tivoli on Pirie Street once they butchered the back of that for apartments, now an empty shell of a once renowned live music venue.

So uneccessary to be demolishing the Cranker. It's a cultural institution and one of Adelaide's oldest buildings. I will definitely sign a petition if there is one.

We get so caught up in expanding our arts scene that we forget we have established institutions that are worth investing into. A good arts culture takes time (look at New Orleans for example) and this is one of those "cultural" pillars that connects us to our past while supporting our future.

Save the Cranker firing into action. You heard it here first.

(I'm all for seeing our CBD grow up, just now historic pubs that are still a big part of our live music scene, when there are still plenty of other suitable sites available).
