That is an awesome idea.. the more I think about the underground rail loop though, the less likely it seems like it will ever happen (in the next 30 years at least anyway). Love the idea of the Sir Samuel Way building being converted to a station though! :applause:

Wait a second, you just completely knocked my idea for being "completely out of character for the area", when there is an already established restaurant life along Gouger Street and parts of King William Street south. But then suggested the site be used for a second railway station on a city loop that we shouldn't expect for another two decades, and a second retail district that would target high-end brands and there isn't even any form of established retail of the sort in the area. How is my idea completely out of character when there is already business around that could support a casino in such a location? Yes, perhaps my idea is ambitious and I'm alone in my perspective; but it's no less ambitious or out of character than what you've suggested.

I agree, both proposals are appropriately ambitious.

As it happens, the casino idea is one that I've been pushing for a while and one that is sensible to revisit given the emerging profile of the riverbank precinct. As Patrick points out, the new and proposed facilities in that area would more than take up the slack of the Casino relocating to Victoria Square, a relocation which would in turn defibrillate the city's geographic heart. In saying that, Nathan's central station/retail precinct is a new and innovative idea that also appeals to me. Either way, with the new courts precinct firmly on the government's agenda, this site is ripe with opportunity and one hopes the powers that be are considering it as intently as we are here.

A casino primarily draws people at night time. Any development in that location should be done with a view to increasing patronage to the Central Markets and Victoria Sq - both of which demand daytime traffic. I didn't say "high-end" brands, I said more up-market compared to Rundle Mall (just enough to differentiate it). There has long been talk of converting the GPO to retail as part of City Central (ala Melbourne's GPO before they kicked everyone out to put H&M in), so the suggestion of bringing retail to the area isn't out of the blue.

Could be interesting, but would need some entertainment as well in order to really draw any crowds.

Yarwood has been great, things have gotten done and most of it positively affecting our city, all of which means the twits in Nth Adlaide will unite to back the next luddite that stands against him in The Lord Mayoral elections:(

Tenant leases in the Adelaide Central Market Arcade expire in 2017, i believe. Anyone know if they are being renewed or not?

Prime opportunity for the ACC to to partner with a developer, earn some income, reinvigorate the arcade, and erect residential apartments above.

Been suggested by several of us over the years...

Agree with Wayno (and others) on new ideas and extra income as suggested. It's important not to kill the golden goose with unrealistic higher rents for stall holders or increased car parking costs.

Adelaide Central Market is an absolute gem for locals and visitors. It's good to see increasing diversity in its offerings such as the new Le Souk, which specializes in North African cuisine and the Let Them Eat vegetarian sibling to its café in the quirky Elizabeth St Croydon precinct.

As new foodie adventures add to the mix, areas for in-market dining/sampling need to be added or enhanced to encourage a proportion of folk lingering and to increase the diverse mix and take advantage of the interest in foodie trends.

We can't lose the unique character of the Market, but it really needs some clean up and rejuvenation (and improved entry/frontage/signage) via the daggy Arcade and that hideous street presence of Coles on Grote St. These currently decrease the Market's visibility and appeal and the Coles acts as a pedestrian blockage.

It's not that easy for visitors and first time attendees to find the Central Market, unless they enter via Gouger St., and the Arcade entry off Victoria Square gives no hint or impression of the delights that lie within. It is in fact an unwelcoming hindrance, doubling as a haven for smokers from businesses nearby and passers by.

Improved signage and an attractive, appealing Arcade, clearly visible from Victoria Square and the tram stop would help matters. The Grote Street facade is perhaps the worst feature and a high priority in rejuvenation planning.

The Chinatown precinct and its connection to the Market also could be enhanced. The spectacular Gouger St Lion Gate entry (Paifang and two sentry-like Shishi lions) leads to a rather bland paved area before reaching the Chinese restaurants.

I've never understood why anyone would like the market. I suppose I must be uncultured!

You're perfectly entitled to your opinion, but boy, you're going to get ripped into for that.

The charm of the market is that you're shopping in something that actually resembles a market, rather than a cold and sterile Coles or Woolworths. There's just more heart in it. Plus you're supporting family businesses. It's always great to go to the market, pick up some fresh produce and have lunch at a nice restaurant on Gouger Street.

It's a market, you dont go there for a David Jones-esque retail experience lol. The produce is, for the better part, better than anything you'll get at a supermarket. Not to mention all the cheese, coffee, cheese, sweets, cheese... the food court... did i mention the cheese? Stroll through the markets after work on a Friday one of my must-do recommendations for visitors. The crowds, the buzz, the specials, the smells.

Im all for refreshing tired parts of Adelaide but I'd hate to see the markets changed materially. I dont buy that there's a visibility/access problem. Heck i even like the dingy old coles, save for the blanked out windows along gouger st.

Always loved the place, ever since I was a kid. Something about being caught up in the atmosphere of the place that I still enjoy. I wouldn't change that much about it either, besides the obvious (visual improvements).
