The Krispy Kreme / On The Run thread
Re: Krispy Kreme opens on Port Road
I was Kurious, so I went and did a drive by this evening and I Kould not believe that there is still quite a long line of mostly fat bogans
I Kontinued driving into the city and found the Bakery on O'Konnell, didn't have to line up and got a bigger and better donut.

It's funny how some interstate media outlets like to feel more superior than Adelaide over stories like this, yet Sydney and Melbourne are just as much as guilty. I heard the line ups in both cities were far far worse.Patrick_27 wrote:I agree with Waewick; the commotion of this store opening is an embarrassment to South Australia. Similar to when IKEA first opened in Adelaide, there was so much criticism yet it happens every where across the world.
GG should of expanded when they had the chance. There is clearly a market, quality stock and not everyone travels into the city.Personally, I don't like or support the idea of Krispy Kreme in Adelaide. I think Peregrine Corporation have turned a nasty on SA business. Firstly, by cutting Balfours off as a supplier of pastries and bringing Pie Face here instead as the alternative (with the intent of opening store fronts for Pie Face in and around the areas that Balfours have established their cafe's), and now this; Krispy Kreme will only compete with existing business who already tend to this market and do so comfortably.
Krispy Kreme's interest in Adelaide only occurred once they saw the success of Gourmet Glaze in it's earlier days, they attempted to buy out GG and establish themselves here through that means, when the offer was turned down they made remarks to suggest they would quash GG. I have no respect for ill-treatment of local business. I also have little respect for local media who are giving free publicity to Krispy Kremes despite the fact that their business can flourish without any advertising.
In the past and currently, Krispy Kreme > novelty. I'm sure most Adelaidians are guilty of indulging in a KK donut whilst interstate, just because you couldn't get it here. But now KK won't be a novelty and eventually KK will just be another business in Adelaide.
KK is struggling interstate with poor sales and lack of interest, which will likely happen here in the future. In the meantime however, despite all the embarrassment it's still a well known international brand and no longer we will see overhead lockers on planes full of KK boxes or constant media reports.

Krispy Kreme opens on Port Road
I would be surprised if it were most Adelaidians.crawf wrote: In the past and currently, Krispy Kreme > novelty. I'm sure most Adelaidians are guilty of indulging in a KK donut whilst interstate, just because you couldn't get it here.
However I would't be at all surprised if it applies to most people on this board. Though I first heard about them when they opened their London shop, I don't think I'd've bought one in Melbourne if I hadn't read about them here.

Re: Krispy Kreme opens on Port Road
Does it make any difference if Krispy Kreme struggle in the future? Peregrine (On the Run) has plenty of franchisees and different brands, some performing better then others. So Krispy Kreme will just be added to Peregrines businesses, I would say they will end up using the factory to deliver to selected "On the Runs". I often wonder how Subway is viable at certain OTR outlets, I guess KK will just be added along side Subway. Oporto, HJ, Wok in the Box, Smokemart etc........
Re: Krispy Kreme opens on Port Road
Yeah must be an Adelaide thing. Wouldnt have been anything like that when Krispy Kreme first opened in Fountain Gate...Patrick_27 wrote:I agree with Waewick; the commotion of this store opening is an embarrassment to South Australia. It's called competition and it's universally acknowledged as being good for everyone (unless you're making excessive products on the back of holding a concentrated market share). I dont know what Balfours have done to deserve a monopoly on servo pies? This kind of economic nationalism around state-based businesses is bizarre. That's 30 new jobs with the opening of KK with more to come.Personally, I don't like or support the idea of Krispy Kreme in Adelaide. I think Peregrine Corporation have turned a nasty on SA business. I cant wait to see people turn on Aldi when they try and get going here. Hey why would we possibly need more grocerers when we have drakes supermarkets?

How well is the competition working so far? Does any of them yet sell a decent chicken pie that's not polluted with vegetables?mshagg wrote: It's called competition and it's universally acknowledged as being good for everyone (unless you're making excessive products on the back of holding a concentrated market share). It seems funny now, but when Franklins first came to SA there was significant opposition to this new interstate chain, and people even petitioned against it on the grounds that we had enough supermarkets already!I cant wait to see people turn on Aldi when they try and get going here. Now that it's gone, we miss them, and will welcome Aldi. I expect we'd also welcome any other international competitors (though there'd be a small backlash against Walmart because of its reputation).

Re: Krispy Kreme opens on Port Road
Has Peregrine actually refused to deal with Balfours? Or have they just stopped selling their products at shops that include a Pie Face? The former could be a problem, but I see nothing wrong with the latter.Patrick_27 wrote:Personally, I don't like or support the idea of Krispy Kreme in Adelaide. What proportion of the bogan queue do you think would otherwise have bought GG?and now this; Krispy Kreme will only compete with existing business who already tend to this market and do so comfortably.
This could actually be a great opportunity for GG. Now that there's an expectation of glazed donuts being available when you refuel, they could supply rival servos, helping them to compete with OTR.

Re: Krispy Kreme opens on Port Road
Forget glazed donuts. The best donuts by far in my opinion are FRESH (eg, straight out of the fryer) donuts with a SMALL amount of sugar and cinnamon on them. Donut king do this very well but they do put far too much sugar and cinnamon on unless you ask specifically to just touch the donut very lightly in it on one side only. That's what I always do.
Also very good are FRESH (eg. cooked less than 1 hour ago) jam donuts which you can get from Breadtop.
Both the above options are very cheap, and you never have to queue!

Re: Krispy Kreme opens on Port Road
From memory Peregrine also have plans for more KK factories at the Portrush/Glen Osmond/SE Fwy intersection and at the OTR at the Port Wakefield/Bolivar Rd intersection as well.

I do make a distinction between doughnuts (made from dough) and donuts (made from batter) and I generally prefer the former. Apple doughnuts are usually best IMO, but hot jam doughnuts can be really good too — though I always think they'd taste much better if they used better jam.pushbutton wrote:Forget glazed donuts. Thanks for the Breadtop tip — I'll try it when I'm getting more excercise.

Re: Krispy Kreme opens on Port Road
That surprises me — I was expecting then to use one factory to supply all the OTRs. But if they're not, maybe there could be an opportunity for GG in some of the others. After all, different OTRs sell fuel from different oil companies. Although one (Mile End) doesn't sell fuel at all — does anyone know why?ChillyPhilly wrote:From memory Peregrine also have plans for more KK factories at the Portrush/Glen Osmond/SE Fwy intersection and at the OTR at the Port Wakefield/Bolivar Rd intersection as well.

Re: Krispy Kreme opens on Port Road
There are actually numerous OTR stores which don't sell fuel, in some cases because they're just a few metres away from another OTR store which does sell fuel. That's not always the case though.Aidan wrote:That surprises me — I was expecting then to use one factory to supply all the OTRs. For example there's one on North Tce opposite the casino which would not be a suitable or large enough site to sell fuel from. There's also one opposite Elizabeth Shopping Centre which doesn't sell fuel, and another on Marion Road, and another on Tapleys Hill Road (and there are probably others too).
Re: Krispy Kreme opens on Port Road
Most of the drive through OTR convenience outlets came along well before the nearby fuel outlets. This was Perigrines initiative when drive through coffee ventures such as Muzz Buzz were popping up, much easier to get a retail outlet up and running than a fuel site. From memory there are 9 of them in Adelaide plus the only fairly recently opened one on Nth Tce as mentioned. I've heard of a KK factory on Waterloo corner (old go cart track) which Perigrine have approval for but not sure about the existing site on Bolivar road corner and can't see where they would put it at the bottom of the freeway site.
Re: Krispy Kreme opens on Port Road
I know its sad but I lined up for 2 hours on sunday night. When I first joined the line up I thought it would only be
a 1 hour wait.
I think overall we should see it as a good thing for Adelaide. A bit of a novelty.

Re: Krispy Kreme opens on Port Road
It is certainly a bit of a novelty, and I don't have a problem with that!
I drove past last night about 7pm thinking the initial "kraze" might have worn off and I would just try one of their donuts to "kompare" it to Donut King and Breadtop donuts. I didn't though as there was STILL a queue of "kars" waiting to get in! The traffic was so "krazy" it wasn't safe for me to check whether or not there was also still a queue of "bogans"!!!
Maybe next week!
