Thanks for the compliment Pikey......
At the end of the day its just about numbers.....Perth Adelaide similar in number (population wise) Similar football set up too....
West Coast have more members than Freo and Adelaide has more members and many more in waiting (currently 6 years waiting list for Gold Membership) than Port Adelaide
Therefore....Make AAMI the home for Pt Adleiade, it will meet and exceed their needs for the next few decades, they will inherit all the facilities that the crows presently have (which are far superior).
Pt Power would benefit immensely from that kind of a set up....Moreover, the SANFL will benefit from two stadia with more bums on seats come game time...That way the SANFL can continue to dominate and contimue to be the number 1 state level football comp!!!!

I don't know about Skycity in Aukland, but Crown is much more than a casino - it's basically a convention centre with casino integrated into it. People go there because it's the scene of the logies, brownlow medal count, and whatever else is being done in Melbourne, and it's got high-end shopping, and it's at the end of Southbank with it's eateries and it's own shops.stelaras wrote:... it would be better for the casino to be moved to a building of its own....Funny thing is, if the casino was to become something major in Adelaide (ie crown like, or skycity in Auckland) it would probably boost tourism...For some reason people that visit other places always check out casino's!
Adelaide casino, while it is in a beautiful building, is isolated somewhat by comparison. Personally, I'm not keen on the modern-style casino in that gracious old building either, it's become a mish-mash of styles, neither complimenting the other. I would prefer to see it move into a modern building down around the Convention Centre area, but it ain't gonna happen.
cheers,

Fair point
in order to move the casino there must be some purpose, not just a casino proper...why not build a purpose building for the casino, shopping (boutique) a few restaurants and an entertainment complex with a few bars/clubs....Which would bring people to the area....
Most people that visit crown are not there for the logies/brownlow or anything else (they are 1 night a year events) people that go to crown are people like you and i, for something to eat, look at whatever art display is happening in and around the foyer....the christmas displays, chinese new year display...or just for something to do..(like movies, visit a bar or two)
Skycity Auckland is just a multi-storey building with casino...some shops and is next door to skycity tower, which is similar to sydney's centre point just taller..
Ide love for adelaide to get a tower similar to centre point/skycity and i believe one was proposed some years ago (200M in height) but i guess the airport wouldn't allow something like that to be built...

Sorry, that's what I meant. People go there to see Crown because it is the venue for all the big events, not particularly because an event is on (which is unlikely, they being once-a-year events). Your other points are also valid.stelaras wrote: ...Most people that visit crown are not there for the logies/brownlow or anything else (they are 1 night a year events) people that go to crown are people like you and i, for something to eat, look at whatever art display is happening in and around the foyer....the christmas displays, chinese new year display...or just for something to do..(like movies, visit a bar or two)

I dont think so, those that want to to go to those places will those that dont won't
The city is bustling here on a Friday night you cant walk down bourke st there is that many people, lygon st is packed so is brunswick southbank and the crown are waiting room to get a seat in a restauraunt..
Sure the population is 3 times larger, but all things relative, The development if it goes ahead and assuming that we get a crown like casino in adelaide will be built to the suit Adelaides current needs...if it was made bigger then it would lie dormant and unused as there wont be clientel to sustain...
If it was built right and the appropriate sudies were conducted it wouldnt kill off any area in the city, it would enhance it..

I think the government should look at building a transport interchange over the railway yards on each side of the Montefiore Road (Morphett Street) bridge. People can then access buses, trams and trains from a central location. After this is in place we can start to consider commercial, residential, sports and recreational developments.

Sounds like a gr8 idea, the train lands are a BIG eye sore, especially wen u drive into the cbd from the port rd, but wether it goes ahead or not is an entirely different question! The CBD seems to be attracting alot of 'proposals', but i would like to know when they are going to happen or if they are going to happen. I think its fantastic if it does go ahead, coz i am sick of having to travel to AAMI, and waiting for a bus is a nightmare!!!!, and hey it might attract some national or world events, but it does really disappoint me when ideas like these are disapproved, Adelaide is such a great city and offers alot potential unfortunately, not everyone sees adelaide that way.

Call for New Convention Centre
In today's Sunday Mail (December 3rd, 2006), Alec Gilbert, the Chief Executive of the Adelaide Convention Centre is calling for a new building (an extension) to be inserted between Morphett Street (Montefiore Road) bridge and the existing Convention Centre. He envisages a building of up to 6-storeys high and of future developments for a new hotel near the precinct and renovating and flattening the old convention centre. Architects are at present designing a masterplan which will be presented to the Adelaide City Council and the State Government early next year.

yeah, i read some of that article, and he said something about the convention centre not having good river frontage and being outdated, dont know what was with that, personally i think the conv. centre is good, its modern, and has a good frontage on the torrens, i think they refurbsihed it in 1999/2000, didnt they???

I found this on the AdeliadeNow website, this is another development planned for the railyards, here is the article:
(sourced from http://www.adelaidenow.com.au)
PLANS are being revived for a waterfront $200 million hotel, casino and apartment complex at the Adelaide railyards.
Former South Australian National Football League umpire Laurie Argent is the "facilitator" for a consortium which he says stands ready to further develop the plans, presented informally to state Liberal government in 2001.
Mr Argent yesterday said Adelaide-based developers were behind the plans for a 22-storey hotel, 240 apartments and waterfront cafes.
He claimed development of the 8.6ha site, fronting the River Torrens, west of the Morphett St bridge, was being frustrated by state and council restrictions.
Mr Argent, who declined to name interested investors, said Adelaide's casino could be relocated from the railway station to the new hotel complex. The project also would include cafes, cinemas, an underground carpark and landscaped parklands atop railway lines.
"Maybe Adelaide doesn't want that. Maybe Adelaide wants only to stay very small and just plod along," said Mr Argent, the managing director of a city-based commercial furniture business.
He urged the State Government to call for expressions of interest, suggesting that would spark a flurry of interest. He said an international investor had pulled out of the consortium after State Government interest in the development waned when Labor took power in 2002. Acting Lord Mayor Cris Magasdi said his view was the site was "not strictly parklands".
He was inclined to support sensible development there. "We need to get something that brings activity into the city," he said.
Acting Transport and Infrastructure Minister Jay Weatherill said there had been "a long list" of proposals for the yards in the past 15 years. "The area remains an active transport corridor," he said.

this is exactly what i was saying needs to happen a few days ago.......it gets rif of the casino from one of the most beuatiful buildings in Adelaide, re-invents the railyards which would be covered by gardens..and provides a new venue to live at , eat at and get entertained....overlooking the the river and all its beauties...
Not to mention that the skyline gets higher and wider and puts us on the map just that little bit more than we already are...
