I'm normally pro-development, but I actually think this is a good decision. Planning laws for that area currently allow buildings up to 5 levels, this was to be 13.

To build a wall along the seafront for the wealthy would really be a case of money over people.

The building was a bit bulky. Was the development proposed in the 5 story or 12 story zone? or was it overlapping like the developer said
The 12 story zone seems to end (or used to) at the laneway at the end of Saltram Road, which makes little sense, the 12 story zone should end at the suburb boundary at Pier Street.
Glenelg is a special location, South Esplanade between Moseley Square and Pier Street should be zoned 12 stories. Hopefully the developer comes back with a less bulky design, there's no reason why this section of South Esplanade should be 5 stories. If the NIMBY's don't like it they should move to Glenelg South

Bad call. This was an entirely appropriate development given the existing highrisecontext of the area along the foreshore. A more inappropriate development is that 14 storey building in Glenelg North just down the road from the Watermark Hotel, there's literally one high-rise on that road and it's surrounded by 2 storey town houses.

Walking the dogs at Glenelg today, noticed the site is now surrounded by construction fencing…does anyone know a status for this one? Is demolition imminent?

Very unlikely. The development application was rejected, and the builder would not be able to demolish unless a development has been approved.

Curious what that article has to say as they've started demolition?!

According to the article, the developer can demolish the existing building without approval.
Some of the residents nearby have complained that they were never informed that demolition
was going to occur.

The developer is now hoping to get approval for a 10 level building.

Who gives a shit what nearby residents think. Seriously, what the hell is wrong with this state?

If you care so much about a building, go fucking buy it so someone else can't demolish and redevelop the block. That fucking simple.

You don't own it? Then it's none of your business.
God damn South Australians, we are the biggest hinderance to our own growth and prosperity then anything else.

You are right rev, the NIMBY attitude in this state would have deterred a lot of developers
from investing here.

It’s a huge risk to buy a block of land when there’s a fair chance that
a development proposal will be rejected.

What does the developer do if they don’t get approval for a 10 level building?
Propose a building that meets the existing development policies, which is 5 storeys. It needs to go before a panel because it is almost 3 times the allowed height.

Now, if you don't agree with the existing policies that apply to that address then maybe that policy needs to be changed. But you can't just completely ignore existing policies that have been negotiated between the state government, local government and the residents. Otherwise we might as well not have a planning system at all if we let anyone just build whatever they want in whatever location they choose.

The zoning is stupid here though. The 12 story zone should end at the suburb boundry, which is Pier Street not the little lane.

All of South Esplanade Glenelg should be in the higher zone. It's really odd and they have excluded this small section.

There are a lot of zoning oddities in SA's planning system, and I agree, this is one of them.
