It better have a special section for the upper-class and wealthy due to health and safety reasons. :)

It appears that the new State Swimming Centre will also contain leisure components.

From the Messenger:
Marion pool plan at the fun stage

TWO corkscrew waterslides are in the latest designs for Marion’s State Aquatic Centre.

Pending final approval from the Development Assessment Commission later this year, the slides will be incorporated on the exterior of the $80 million project, at no additional cost.

A leisure pool and a water playground will also be added.

Sports Minister Michael Wright said the additional “fun play” components were part of the final stage of the design process which recently concluded.

“Our aim is to have a State Aquatic and Leisure Centre that’s a central hub for all South Australians to play, train and perform,” he said.

Mr Wright said the addition of the waterslides would not affect the cost or timeline of the project.

If the plans are approved, the centre would contain five pools: the competition pool, and pools for diving and water polo, leisure, learn to swim classes and toddlers.

Marion Mayor Felicity-ann Lewis said the council never wanted the venue to be only for elite swimmers.

“When we first went shopping for support for an indoor aquatic centre ... we wanted things for water safety, learn to swim and fun for the community,” she said.

“The notion of having good, quality, safe spaces for kids to play and families to do things together are important.”

Work on the aquatic centre and the neighbouring GP Plus Health Care Centre is continuing off Morphett Rd, Marion, and is expected to be completed by next March.

WOW! Waterslides, a lesiure pool & a water playground!! Will it have tropical greenery surrounding them, like the Adelaide Aquatic Centre?
I feel like I'm really taking the dip already!! :D

As opposed to "non fun" play components?

Well doesn't that just fly in the face of the original reason for this development? I guess they decided that there's more money to be made from waterslides than not.

Seems very poorly planned, that they simply tacked this on mid-build. If it is a good idea now, surely it was a good idea when they were drawing the plans... :?

Sounds more like they had this planned all along, but touted the professional angle at first to get around concerns of the competition with Adelaide Aquatic Centre.

As of last saturday, a huge truss dominates the right hand side of this photo. Would have photos too, but for that pesky rain.

Some of you might think I'm always negative when I post on these forums, and I am the first to admit it. It's only because I honestly believe Adelaide is basically a great place but it seriously undersells itself and far too often settles for second best. I find this especially true when it comes to anything related to leisure and tourism. By tourism I mean real serious world class attractions that can attract visitors from interstate and overseas, but also add to the fun and enjoyment of living in Adelaide for permanent residents. For some reason we seem to be very poor at providing such amenities.

However having just looked at the article linked above from Candetti constructions, well I'm almost speechless.

Who'd have ever thought it - ADELAIDE'S GETTING A SPACEBOWL!!!!!!!!!! WOOOO-HOOOOO! It's about time!
YIPPEEEEEE!

Shout it from the rooftops, go wake up the neighbours and let them know. For once we're gonna have some actual FUN in Adelaide! I actually checked my calendar to make sure it wasn't April 1st. Good news, it's not. This is fantastic.

I had until now been under the impression that the State Aquatic Centre (awful name by the way, can we think of something better?) was just going to be a straightforward rectangular pool for serious swimming competitions. In other words, catering mainly for elite athletes really.

To find out we're getting a leisure pool which, although it looks like it might be best suited to little kids mainly at least has some decent things in it like water toys etc, and to see that we're getting two pretty good looking water slides - one of which will be a space bowl, well it gives me real hope that Adelaide may not be doomed to be boring forever after all!

My only question is why on earth haven't they promoted this in any way? Does it have to be a secret for some reason? They should have at the very least a massive photo of the artist impression up on billboards all over Adelaide. I'm pretty sure most people in Adelaide still don't know about it and won't till it opens, if they bother to go.

Anyway it's happening and that's the most important thing. A wave pool would have put the icing on the cake but I guess we can't have everything all at once. Who knows, maybe they are building a wave pool but it's still a secret :)
