I agree, couldn't they have at least left the art deco street frontage of the old cinema and built what ever(shopping/retail/offices) behind that? It's such a shame that it's lost but it's too late now. The least they can do is replace it with something decent...skyliner wrote:NO street interaction zone that I can see at ground level - what a waste! An open hole for the street front - breaks the continuity of the retail strip.
Wish that cinema was not touched.

Iconic Glenelg music store to close
Local News11 Apr 12 @ 06:08am by Tim Williams
ZEKE Osmond and Rob Davis had great success when they took over Glenelg music store Krypton Discs in 1999.
“When we started running the place we doubled it (turnover) and turned it into probably the best independent music place around,”
Mr Osmond says of the Jetty Rd shop, an institution among indie, metal and dance music fans.
“We made the shop bigger and put in better ranges and made sure we never ran out of stuff.”
But after 13 years managing and later running the business, crippling trade has forced them to close its doors at the end of the month.
The pair bought the business, known in the `80s as Glenelg Records and Tapes, in 2006.
“We didn’t want it in the hands of a big music chain,” Mr Osmond, 39, says.
“The shop was a big performer at the time and there would have been plenty of buyers sniffing around.”
But the owners say trade has been savaged over the past two years by a range of factors, most notably customers turning to buying or illegally downloading music online.
Night trading in the city, chain stores selling items below cost and a slump in the popularity of Jetty Rd have also hit hard.
The closure comes just four months after wholesalers voted Krypton Discs the Independent Retailer of the Year at the Australian Record Industry Association (ARIA) Awards.
Mr Osmond and Mr Davis could not afford to fly to Sydney to accept the accolade.
“We’re selling more than anybody and still can’t stay open,” Mr Osmond says.
“Basically all we can offer now is superior service and knowledge, but that’s not enough.”
Mr Davis, 42, says support from customers since announcing the closure late last month has been overwhelming.
“I had one woman crying at the counter,” he says.
“One person said they blamed themselves for not buying more.”
Mr Osmond added: “A lot of people travel a long way just to shop here.
“It’s great to hear that people appreciate the shop but hard that we can’t keep it going for them.”
They once had as many as 10 staff, but that has gradually whittled down to none.
Both say they would be reluctant to work in the music industry again.
All stock in a closing down sale is 40 percent off until April 29.

I actually feel bad for Krypton Discs, a victim of modern times. The writing has been on the wall for music retailers for a long time now though.

Because the retailing of music on physical media is not a sustainable business any more. It's becoming a niche market. Since the popularity of iPods and etcetera, online downloads are where the money is.Waewick wrote:makes you wonder why they don't just move to a less expensive strip?

WOW
Six storey mansion planned for Glenelg
Local News24 Apr 12 @ 09:00am by Tim Williams
GRAND DESIGNS: Rasim And Sogand Kasumovic want to build their dream mansion on the old Colley Motel site.
TALL ORDER: An artist's impression of the top floors of a six-storey building planned by a Glenelg couple.
THIS six-storey building will not be as tall as some others on Colley Tce, Glenelg, but it will be unique in the Adelaide real estate market.
That’s because it is not just another apartment block, but the dream home of Rasim and Sogand Kasumovic.
The Glenelg couple have applied to Holdfast Bay Council to build the mansion, in which an entire floor would be devoted to the master bedroom.
The Colley Motel, which they bought last year, would be demolished to make way for the house.
Mr Kasumovic is a property investor who also runs carwash and cleaning businesses, while Mrs Kasumovic is studying law and biotechnology at Flinders University.
Mrs Kasumovic said they were “planning a big family” to fill the seven-bedroom home, in which the ground floor would feature a pool with a sunken bar, sauna, gym and five-car garage.
The first floor would be devoted to entertainment, including a home theatre and another bar, and feature a circular, 5m-wide glass floor looking over the pool.
Kitchen, dining and family areas would take up the second floor, with six bedrooms and four bathrooms on the third.
The master bedroom dominating the fourth floor would have an ensuite, robe room, and a spa with foothills views.
A gazebo, 12-person spa and outdoor kitchen would be built on the rooftop level.
The house would have a lift accessing all levels, which would each have front and rear balconies.
Mr Kasumovic said they were determined to stay in Glenelg and raise a family there after moving into Liberty Towers when they married 18 months ago.
“Glenelg is the best place in Australia,” he said.
“We’ve designed it to blend in with everything else.
“We’re excited, definitely. We just can’t wait until it’s done.”
Diamanti Designs director Jim Diamanti, who designed the home, said a Versace interior designer would be flown in from Italy to oversee the internal fitout.
“It’s not going to be skimping on anything,” he said.
If approved by the council, construction would start by the end of the year and take about two years, Mr Diamanti said.
The couple would not say how much the house would cost.
Real Estate Institute of SA president Greg Moulton said a six-storey house would be “unbelievably unique for the Adelaide real estate market”.
The Real Estate Institute of Australia was unaware of any other detached six-storey houses around the country, though it does not keep figures on the heights of homes.
A spokesman said: “No-one can recall such a thing but we can’t categorically rule it out.”

Maybe. There's a couple of homes being built high-up in the eastern suburbs at the mo - $10m & $14m each. The owners' names elude me at present. Father & Son i believe...crawf wrote:This could easily become our most expensive home, 6 stories wow :O

Hey Omi, to share a nearmap link you must 'right click' on the map, choose 'share' and copy/paste that url. Seems you copy/pasted the url from the top of the page which takes me to the last map location I visited, not the one you wanted to share.Omicron wrote:Yes, the On the Run chaps, if memory serves.Wayno wrote:Maybe.
