The Citi Fringe apartment building on South Terrace was getting a new paint job on its Eastern and Western walls.

I personally wish those small buildings in front of the convention centre on riverside would be demolished. I understand what they are used for but they're just an eyesore.
The boat sheds? They were supposed to be relocated to a consolidated facility west of the Morphett St Bridge from memory - that was all connected with the Marshall governments plan to build the basketball stadium on the west side of the bridge and dig out a big pedestrian walkway under the bridge’s southern approach. This was all canned by Malinauskas’ government when they were elected - campaigning against it was a centrepiece of their election campaign.

And yet they still can’t get the hospital and ramping right.

Malaka is indeed that.

Seems a bit weird that the SCAP meeting is scheduled for tomorrow and yet there is no agenda available.

Was hopeful the Masonic Keystone building would be on the agenda

He says a lot of stupid things in this, which isn’t surprising: https://www.indaily.com.au/news/adelaid ... ousing-fix

Actually, he isn't wrong in most of his comments here. Most of the old office buildings are not suited to conversion to residential, and the ones that are will only provide a limited amount of new housing, which barely makes a dent in the amount of housing construction required. That being said, there needs to be work done to provide the right planning and building code frameworks to encourage adaptive reuse as there is a lack of consistent national standards at the moment.

I agree that it’s cost prohibitive in many cases and hard to do, but it should still be encouraged where viable, which his comments don’t help with. I also disagree with his statement that vacant houses aren’t an issue, they are, and so are airbnbs in terms of taking longer term rentals offline - but that’s a different debate.

I'm quite surprised by the arguments that this cannot be done.

We have multiple examples in our city of this very thing....

*The former ATO building on KWS converted into apartments
*The former SANTOS building on Grenfell Street converted into the Princes Apartments
*The old ETSA building converted into AIR apartments
*the old AMP building converted into the UV apartments
*the old Bank SA building at the corner of Rundle Mall and Pulteney street converted into student apartments
*Adelaide House converted into the Rendezvous Hotel
*the T&G Building converted into serviced apartments
*the CML Building converted into the Mayfair Hotel

Has Champion ever been educated in urban planning?

He misses the point so hard here.
Champion said vacant houses were “an issue but it’s not the issue” in terms of housing supply.

“Empty houses across Australia, it’s a great debate for the ABC to have or The Guardian to have, it’ll get everybody excited, it’ll generate a lot of attention same as adaptive reuse of office building, but actually it’s not terribly important for supply,” he said.
Our state, our city, our future.

I can't remember where I read it but I am fairly sure I read an article recently that said in just SA alone, there are around 1 million homes just sitting vacant for various reasons. What is Champion talking about? Of course empty houses are important to the current issues.

There's no way there would be 1 million homes sitting vacant in SA alone. Nationwide probably, but not just in SA.

There are so many vacant blocks in the CBD that are waiting to be developed. Balfours way on Franklin St and that block on the western section of Gouger St are a couple that spring to mind. Why are we just allowing prime real estate spots like these to sit idle in the middle of a housing crisis?

There's nothing stopping the government from purchasing that land from private owners and developing it into public housing and/or selling some of it.

I'd truly be amazed if there was 1 million houses sitting empty across the country.
There was 10.8 million dwellings as of 2022 according to the ABS. That's over 9%. Hard to believe..
Rents are through the roof, who in their right mind would sit on an empty house and not make an extra $500-800 a week? That's $26,000 to $41,600 extra income a year. During a cost of living crisis.

Then again if we know anything about how the government counts things like how they count employment/unemployment, I guess anything is possible.

According to this article in The Age, (https://www.theage.com.au/politics/vict ... 5f3gd.html), there are just under 50,000 entire houses listed as short term rentals in Victoria. Add in private holiday houses and other vacant properties, it wouldn't be a stretch to assume there's 75,000+ in Victoria.

NSW has a population 20% more than Victoria. Assume the number of short term rentals/vacant properties scales linearly, you're looking at approximately 90,000+ vacant properties in NSW.

That's 165,000 vacant properties in Vic/NSW.

Obviously there are some massive assumptions in thise figures. How many private holiday homes are there(??) Vacant homes (??)

1 million vacant across the country probably isn't right (it could be though), but it would easily be in the realm of 400-500,000+.
