Is there not a reasonably activated thoroughfare down Vaughun Pl (about 20 meters away from where a path through the ayers house grounds would run)?

I wouldn't use "reasonably activated" to describe Paxton's Walk. The ground level of the Palais and Alpha apartments buildings were poorly done. Other than Streetlight, every tenancy has struggled.

Yes fair comment - it's a bit of a red-brick tunnel down towards the IGA, with those frustrating elevation changes and steps in front of the buildings.

That said I'm quite fond of the space further south with the Exeter's outdoor area and the Elephant's quirky exterior. Picture that thoroughfare dressed up with some catenary lighting, public art installations etc and you'd have something that resembles a cozy, unique laneway.

If they can polish the turd that is topham mall then surely there's potential in this space lol.

A stupid idea. People moved easily between the ORAH site and Rundle Street when the hospital was still there, I don't see how this is going to increase the number of people moving between Rundle Street and the site. Seems like just another attempt to sell the tram line extension which at this point goes to nowhere, all the while damaging the grounds of Ayers House. Kind of getting sick of the lack of respect this government has towards heritage...

I'm not supporting the laneway, but it would not exactly damage the grounds of Ayers House. It would go through what is now a carpark. Zero impact on the landscaping.

I'd agree that there's adequate access between Rundle and North via Vaughn and Paxton.

But I will say that I'd love to see the former Rundle entrance to Palace reactivated. If carving a path through to Ayers House does that, then great. It needn't affect the cinema much - GU Film House appears to be managing fine with its box office separate to its theatres.

Also, as previously stated, the tram extension does not go to 'nowhere'. This paltry 1km extension passes arguably as many of Adelaide's major attractions and institutions than the remaining Xkm of the line does.

You could also argue that none of tram or train lines go 'anywhere'. Yeah sure, they pass through a lot of places but there's always more beyond that. Why doesn't the Glenelg line get a reputation as the tram to nowhere just because it stops at Glenelg instead of turning along the coast to Henley or Brighton? Is the Belair line a line to nowhere just because it doesn't go through to Stirling?

Even in its current (temporary) form terminating where it does, the new tram extension still ends at the Botanic Gardens, Parklands (and major Fringe venue), a brand new high school and potentially a contemporary art gallery and whatever else happens on the oRAH site in the not too distant future. I can't see how that can be classed as 'nowhere'.

A little different... you're literally giving direct access to the public to cinemas vs. having to walk through a foyer to get to the cinemas. People could easily just walk into the cinemas. Further to that, I know that Palace Nova already struggling policing homeless people coming and sleeping in their cinemas.

A little different... you're literally giving direct access to the public to cinemas vs. having to walk through a foyer to get to the cinemas. People could easily just walk into the cinemas. Further to that, I know that Palace Nova already struggling policing homeless people coming and sleeping in their cinemas.

All it requires is an usher checking tickets. You'd be crossing a narrow laneway versus walking across a courtyard. The Palace might even welcome having their cinema more discoverable from Rundle - many still don't know it's there.

Was it? I assumed it was whoever owned the building trying to make the Cinema Place tenancies viable. And that was when they also had a Rundle Street presence through the Nova. But anyway, all I'm saying is I don't think it'd hurt - maybe even help.
