Re: #U/C: $100m State Swimming Centre
Just checked the Candetti article again, to make sure I wasn't imagining it. It seems according to the sign on the wall in the artists imnpression that the name might actually be "SA Aquatic and Leisure Centre".
It's not as exciting as something like "SA Splash!" or "Marion Waterworld" but it certainly beats "State aquatic centre"!
I can comfortably live with "SA Aquatic and Leisure Centre", I think.

Sorry, but what the hell is a spacebowl?? I'm curious!pushbutton wrote:Some of you might think I'm always negative when I post on these forums, and I am the first to admit it. It's only because I honestly believe Adelaide is basically a great place but it seriously undersells itself and far too often settles for second best. I find this especially true when it comes to anything related to leisure and tourism. By tourism I mean real serious world class attractions that can attract visitors from interstate and overseas, but also add to the fun and enjoyment of living in Adelaide for permanent residents. For some reason we seem to be very poor at providing such amenities.
However having just looked at the article linked above from Candetti constructions, well I'm almost speechless.
Who'd have ever thought it - ADELAIDE'S GETTING A SPACEBOWL!!!!!!!!!! WOOOO-HOOOOO! It's about time!
YIPPEEEEEE!
Shout it from the rooftops, go wake up the neighbours and let them know. For once we're gonna have some actual FUN in Adelaide! I actually checked my calendar to make sure it wasn't April 1st. Good news, it's not. This is fantastic.
I had until now been under the impression that the State Aquatic Centre (awful name by the way, can we think of something better?) was just going to be a straightforward rectangular pool for serious swimming competitions. In other words, catering mainly for elite athletes really.
To find out we're getting a leisure pool which, although it looks like it might be best suited to little kids mainly at least has some decent things in it like water toys etc, and to see that we're getting two pretty good looking water slides - one of which will be a space bowl, well it gives me real hope that Adelaide may not be doomed to be boring forever after all!
My only question is why on earth haven't they promoted this in any way? Does it have to be a secret for some reason? They should have at the very least a massive photo of the artist impression up on billboards all over Adelaide. I'm pretty sure most people in Adelaide still don't know about it and won't till it opens, if they bother to go.
Anyway it's happening and that's the most important thing. A wave pool would have put the icing on the cake but I guess we can't have everything all at once. Who knows, maybe they are building a wave pool but it's still a secret

White Water World & Wet N Wild Waterpark in QLD may also have Spacebowls too!
I'm really going to be taking a dip when it opens!

Just because the one in Darwin is nothing special doesn't mean Adelaides would be nothing special. Why did they remove it?
Re: #U/C: $100m State Swimming Centre
Walked past the site today and there a five pools all but installed to the South East of the main competition pool/s. They looked to be of decent size too.
The cladding on the medical centre looks great too, different shades of green.

I think the Candetti article says opening is scheduled for March 2011, so yes that's pretty much 6 months.

Surprised this hasn't been mentioned but Adelaide has scored the 2012 FINA World Junior Diving Championships. It will be the first time Australia has hosted the event
Next year Adelaide will be hosting the 2011 World Surf Life Saving Championships, Australian Elite Junior Championships, Australian Aged Championships and 2012 Australian Open Championships and possibly the London Olympic Games Trials. Not a bad list of events for one sporting complex

I say - the slope on the seating area is astonishingly sharp when viewed in person. Patrons who lean too far forward in their seats will fall in the pool. Hilarity ensues.

Re: #U/C: $100m State Swimming Centre
I agree. It is very steep. I don't think I'd feel comfortable on it.
Why do they need such a lot of seats anyway? If they hadn't built that huge sloping area they could have had a fantastic wave pool or even a lazy river (or both) in that amount of space.
All that's needed for those who are not swimming is a nice poolside cafe with a few tables and chairs, and some "sun-loungers" so people can lie back and relax by the pool. It is ridiculous to have hundreds of seats on a big concrete slope! What on earth were they thinking?
