That article is all made-up-bullshit by the Advertiser. They're not copying Portland.

Portland's light rail system is a loop that only covers the central areas of Portland. The layout is quite different from Adelaide's and it isn't exactly fair to compare the two.

Adopting light rail systems in cities has become extremely popular all around the world. If governments spent large amounts of money to rip them up in the 50's and 60's and are now putting them back in they must be benefiting most cities. Just go to
http://www.lightrailnow.org and click on LRT Systems Planned and it'll confirm how popular light rail is. To compare Adelaide just to Portland is unfair and this bloke seems to be the minority. cheers

An interesting read Mooshie. (Feb. 4 2007). I agree with your final thoughts - A TOTALLY DIFFERENT CITY - and...with another culture and set of circumstances. No matter what happens, there will always be critics - the only avoidance of which is do nothing, say nothing and be nothing. Then whatever the develpment is, it will always be a perfect proposition.

I have to admit I am very sceptical about the ability of this project to regenerate areas along the tramline. The area where the tramline currently exists, in the southern half of the city, is not exactly thriving because of it.
I am very much in favour of the tramline extension for several reasons including it contributing to increased public transport use, improving the atmosphere/uniqueness of the city. But I wish they wouldn't keep pushing this issue of it regenerating the West End which I think is just setting the project up for ridicule when it doesn't happen.

Its going to be great to have free public transport running every 5-20mins along KWS & North Terrace at nighttimes, should bring more people into the city.

Seriously whats the point of starting something like this, Its not going to change anything
- Its a done deal, these small-minded people need to forget about it and focus on something more important than extending the tramline by 1.6km - its insane and embarassing for Adelaide.

There's already several new high-rises proposed for the area around King William and South Tce.

Are you saying that maybe these devs are co-related to the tramline extension?
Cheers

The Sunday Mail used the numbers received by the no trams website to justify their call for the minister to scrap the tram extension. This is further evidence of the toilet journalism of the Advertiser. If they think the government will cancel the tram line extension because of 700 people, there is something wrong with them. Adelaide is a city of 1.15 million people. 700 people only represent like 0.1%!

I know that whatever number he gets isnt going to change the government mind, my point is really to get the number of pro emails to him, so he can stop banging on about it everynight on 5AA

I think the general demographic that listens to 5AA is going to vote Liberal either way.

People are always more likely to voice their opinion when it's something they are against than when they support something. Most normal people just carry on with their lives without worrying about this sort of thing.

AG, as they say, you don't protest in favour of the status-quo.
