Some people at a bar 150m from the plaza itself

Perhaps we're all wrong, and those renders of big empty lobby spaces (that also now block the view of parliament, the supposed reason for allowing an office tower in the first place) will actually be filled with a number of venues intended to bring people to the plaza and make it a lively space.
I mean look, when I went past the other day it was full of uni students chatting and studying. I also walked past and night and there are some families walking around. So it not completely dead as it is.

I think during events like gather round it will be full of food trucks and some events relating to gather round. After AFL I’m sure there will be footy fans going through it and getting a bite to eat around 10pm when match’s finish. Also events like fringe, cabaret festival etc.

We need to get our head around the fact that this tower will only bring people to the plaza not take away. The old plaza with the concrete blocks was very dead. The jury is still out on whether we could have built something which could have been socially better and more activating for the plaza, but the decision has been made in this tower will be built here.

I think it’ll be reasonably active, but not super active.

I have been waiting for many years for a decent skyscraper to transform the skyline.

Bring it on - the new plaza area is much more alive and improved on the old barren space before.

And the view from the top floor bar will be a real feature, somewhere to take visitors to see Adelaide from along the coastline to the hills.

Adding my two cents as someone who spends a little bit of time there.

It's both a thoroughfare and a place where people sit. There were meant to be more dining places, but I think Flinders Uni moving in stopped that, as most of those spaces were removed at the same time our separate entrance was added. That trades one type of activity for another.

I also think there is a very deliberate reason why pop-up venues keep appearing - probably buying time/faking atmosphere until the new tenancies are built.

As for the restaurant, I'm not sure it's the right fit for the area at the moment. I'm not sure if many office workers want a premium dining experience, and I doubt many people going to Adelaide Oval want it. That leaves it competing with the casino for theatre attendees. A couple of smaller, edgier venues that spill out onto the surrounding areas better could have done more for the plaza over the next few years.

That actually low key makes sense… directly behind the festival centre and all that. Matches the sculptures directly in front.

See I didn’t actually like either of the previous versions of this building to be honest. They both looked like vapes with very little architectural merit to them. It gave the NIMBY losers in north Adelaide a foot stool to stand on to complain that it was just “another glass tower”.

This new design is striking and extremely unique in Australia, whichever way you look at it. It will be an icon of our city, good or bad!

Would never have known that historical diamond connection without you pointing that out, thanks Andy.
You literally change your opinion quicker than a heartbeat, you were the champion of the original proposal for pages on this thread, don't act now like you didn't rate it.

The public realm of this proposal is attricious. Not only that moving this many workers to a site which has no retail or lunch options and out of the core cbd where those businesses will ultimately suffer. All so malinauskus gets a vanity project.
You do realise that the core of the CBD is a 5 minute walk from the tower, to Rundle, VIC square, central market etc. Saying these towers will remove traffic for businesses in the CBD is just not true. All the students from Flinders uni in Festival Tower 1 go back and forth between the CBD amenities all day long.

There will be a couple of cafes and bars in the new tower, but the vast vast majority will just walk into the city where they would usually get their lunch.

There is nothing subtracting from the CBD with these developments.
You must have missed the original government memo on why they were partnering with Walker on this project, part of it was to bring people to Festival Plaza and provide a destination for spectators coming back into the CBD after an event at Adelaide Oval. Only now, this development has far less hospitality amenities than promised, and those that are there shut out a sizeable portion of the spending population due to their high price-point; Station Road, the one restaurant offering that's owners were invited to open in Festival Tower has effectively bombed in trade because everyone above can't afford to eat there and Festival Plaza is not the daytime or nighttime destination it was promised to be. And yes, those destinations you've mentioned are in the CBD, but you're kidding yourself if you think that Vic Square, the Central Markets or even Rundle Mall are mere five minute walk from this space.

I would hope to God that whatever hospitality offering turns out to be anything else except another stock standard American burger bar, Cibo or a Funk or yet another "dive" banh mi vietnamese cafe.

A bar offering beer and hearty breakfast/lunches/dinners would probably be the best fit for the bottom level of this tower. That would really entice the Footy men to come into the plaza from AO.

A Vietnamese bean bun restaurant or a weird Gen-Z cafe ain't doing shit.

Diverse food offering would be ideal something for everyone. Pub food can be found anywhere. Maybe something gastro that’s pub food with a twist.

Don’t underestimate an Adelaidian’s food palette. This isn’t the Gold Coast. Even the Bogan-inclined don’t mind something a bit different.

Not a bogan but I've always wanted to take a Pie Floater to work for lunch. Pea and Ham soup hits the right notes on a cold rainy winter day. At the very least, we want something creative beyond Acai and health food.
