When asked by Matt Abraham and David bevan on ABC Radio, where the funding for the rail upgrade would come from, MHS said about $500million could be saved by scrapping the Marj and upgrading the RAH instead.
ABC Journos: "But hang on, last month you said you would use that money to do up country hospitals, now you're saying you'll use it to upgrade the rail system - you can't spend the same money twice!"
MHS: "(cough, splutter) Ahem!..."
He still hasn't learned to talk the talk, let alone walk the walk.

Gauge-convertible sleepers on the Outer Harbor line:

When are they supposed to start resleepering the Norlunga and
Belair lines, anyone know? And will they use gauge convertable
sleepers?
What amazes me is not only this governments lack of action
on road and rail transport but the lack of a future transport
plan.
If they are thinking of letting RAIL rot to oblivion then at least
build a few freeways where we can drive our cars for GOD's sake.
But they arent doing either, instead you'll have the MARJ and
the new Murray Bridge Prison... I am sure those assets will
be used by the general public on a daily basis.

As it's been said before: Things like prisons and hospitals are being built under PPP, but no infrastructure will be built under PPP.
And, yes, the new sleepers will be gauge-convertible.

Ok, lets close down all the hospitals and prisons, hell why stop there NO government money should be used for the polce force also. oh and the schools, who needs schools right?

Your are a real bafoon "cruise" i never said close the hospitals/prisons or understaff the police...
But it is easy to see that you belong to the group of people that are so easily brainwashed by
the RANN Goverment spin on Health, Education and Law Enforcement...
They should learn to balance the budget like every other Australian State and not fund Health
Education and Law Enforcement at the expense of other areas of the budget.
Our health system is already one of Australia's Best, our education system isn't bad
and our Law and Order is really up there!!! But our City Freeways are non existant
and our Public Transport is the worst in Austrlia.

Park-and-ride: Now that the Mitsibushi factory is going to close, there's a fantastic opportunity to develop park-and-ride from the Tonsley line. Between the rail line and the Mitsibushi factory is a HUGE carpark, capable of holding at least 2000 cars. (Just look on Google Earth.) Once the upholstry section of the factory is dismantled, the main entrance road to the factory would probably be extended through the current factory site to join an existing road to the west of the railway line. What a great place to develop park-and-ride, just where the capacity of South Road decreases from 3 lanes down to 2. The capacity of a lane of an arterial road is about 800 vehicles per hour. A carpark of this scale (combined with attractive semi-experess services to Adelaide) would make an impressive dent in the traffic !
TransAdelaide could be innovative, and try to set up some interim arrangements to make this carpark available while the Anzac Highway - South Road underpass is under construction.

It is indeed a fantastic idea, but the concept of a tonsley interchange has been on the cards for some time. They even released detailed plans in the paper at one point.
I think that if the land does go residential you will finally see a top notch rail interchange down there either at the end of the line, closer to mitsubishi or both, the cost-benefit is just too high to ignore.

Clovelly Park station is the closest to the Tonsley Park site. It sits smack bang on the western entrance to the current factory. South Road is several hundred metres away from the train station. Building a car park so large would face the same challenges as the huge car parks that many airports have, they would require an internal transportation system in itself, usually a shuttle bus linking the car park to the facility it is meant to serve. I'm sure there are more efficient and productive ways of using such a large piece of land.

I've often thought that having several large car parks on the outskirts of the CBD, on the major feed routes into the CBD, with efficient, regular and convenient people movers (monorails!
) into the CBD would be an idea.
But then I thought of the magnificent bottle necks in and out of such structures, the logistical problems of that, and the stink that the car park operators in the city would make. So it would take a LOT of getting it right.
