Yep I agree, should rebuild the jetty into something more impressive than what exists there at the moment. Here's a couple of European examples:

Hope that's not all - does the council have any vision for future development of the jetty? Unless you like fishing (which will probably soon be prohibited anyway) there's not much to do there than to walk to the end of it and then turn back. Not really a drawcard.

Got a source on fishing being prohibited? Or is this part of the absurd backlash against the marine parks?

Also I agree that more should be done with suburban jetty's, but at the same time the amount of people who walk along the jetty in warmer months would suggest it is in fact a drawcard.

Jetty widening to hide sand pipes

Holdfast Bay Council has approved a plan to widen Glenelg jetty to disguise two unsightly pipes.

A framework will be put over the pipes and a handrail installed on the south side to widen the jetty by one metre.

There had been some community outcry about the pipes, which were installed as part of a project to move sand from Glenelg to beaches further south along the Adelaide coastline.

Holdfast Bay Mayor Ken Rollond said councillors were happy with the State Government plan to overcome the eyesore.

"It's really a perfect solution. It makes it so the jetty is useable for whatever it was before," he said.

"The visual impact now it looks like a normal jetty.

"They're going to paint the side of this frame in a concrete colour. You wouldn't be able to see the pipes unless you're directly under the jetty."

Mr Rollond said the work was planned for March or April to avoid any disruption on the beach over summer.

An outlay that could been avoided with a bit of foresight...

PLANS for a six-storey mansion overlooking Glenelg's Colley Reserve have finally won approval.

Revised designs for the seven bedroom house received the go ahead from Holdfast Bay's Development Assessment Panel this week, after initial plans were rejected.

The design and scale of the building, including increasing its front and side setbacks, were altered to meet council planning requirements.
Glenelg couple Rasim and Sogand Kasumovic lodged an appeal in the Environment, Resources and Development (ERD) Court last month after their first application was knocked back by the panel in October.

The mansion, in which an entire floor will be devoted to the master bedroom, will be built on the site of the Colley Motel, which was bought by the couple last year.
Diamanti Designs director Jim Diamanti, who designed the home, said the couple was "rapt" with the outcome.

"They want to start building within three months, so we will put forward a demolition plan to the council as soon as possible," Mr Diamanti said.
He said the minor changes were made as part of the ERD Court's conciliation process, resulting in the second application to the panel.

No major changes were made to the internal layout, he said.

The ground floor will feature a pool with a sunken bar, sauna, gym and four-car garage.

The first floor will be devoted to entertainment, including a home theatre and another bar, and feature a circular, 5m-wide glass floor overlooking the pool.

Kitchen, dining and family areas will take up the second floor, with six bedrooms and four bathrooms on the third floor.

The master bedroom dominating the fourth floor will have an ensuite, robe room, and a spa with foothills views. A gazebo, the spa and outdoor kitchen will be built on the rooftop level.

It's only a drawcard to walk along a jetty because there's little else to do in Adelaide! However I would certainly agree a lot could be done to make jetties into drawcards which really would provide something exciting to do. However I have my doubts whether there are enough people in Adelaide who would want that.

However I would certainly agree a lot could be done to make jetties into drawcards which really would provide something exciting to do. However I have my doubts whether there are enough people in Adelaide who would want that.

There's plenty to do in Adelaide.
