I see the point of your comparison, but I think despite the similarities in symmetry, there is a stark difference between Empire Melbourne and this. Largely the materials, the different shapes and such, I've seen Empire in person and it's rather stunning in a brutalist kind of way. With this, I would rather a communist bloc apartment building because at-leastt there is a philosophy behind the design, the only philosophy behind this is cheap.Algernon wrote: ↑Fri Mar 12, 2021 4:32 pmThis building seems to match the fortunes of its long lost cousin Empire Melbourne. The designs are fairly similar and Empire had as bad a run with the enthusiasts on OzScrapers as seen here. All and sundry were shitting on that thing as it was built. I think the most memorable spray was "upmarket remand centre". By the time it was built, nobody wanted to truly admit they borderline liked it.
I don't think this building will quite match those fortunes in the end. What I said about buildings being optimised for certain angles holds true for both. However, Empre's architect was switched on and increased the number of angles by angling the fins at seemingly random but logical intervals. Result - looks better from more angles and never the same whenever you look at it. This one other other hand will always look good stood at a slight angle to the sides and farkn Scheißenhausen from the front. Pro tip, a mature london plane right in front should block that view from the street.

It is disappointing this building isn't broken up with much larger windows. As it stands it's very bulky. My preference would have been for a quality glass-only exterior skin rising above the old building below. It is quite common, in the UK for example, to deliberately use very modern materials (steel and glass) for new/additional structures on heritage sites. This method provides a clear distinction between the old and the new without any attempt to 'blend' or 'conform' to the existing built-form. For a premier boulevard such as North Terrace, it does not deserve such architectural mediocrity this building provides.

Looks like there has been a considerable crane height increase on this project over the weekend.
Also, viewing this from Adelaide Oval on Saturday, the fins actually have more of a textural impact that first thought. Still feel that this will be an underwhelming tower, it will be interesting to see how the transition floors work appearance wise. Hopefully they're not as stark as shown on the initial renders.

This should top out by the end of the year. What's next for Adelaide once this has finished ?
This could be the last of the tall timber.

Probably the Central Market if that proceeds as planned
Not convinced the other projects will go ahead
Things seem to be slowing

F***ing hell. It's not even halfway done and it makes every building around it look more rundown and dilapidated than they already are.
Plus what is with the marketing -> "Uncommon living for uncommon students". What does that even mean?

Uncommon - not often found or seen. They won't be seen very often with so little windows, that's for sure. So disappointing to have this built on North Terrace.

They've reached the first transition level. Looks like they got their styling inspiration from the Outer Harbor rail bridge over South Road...

It’s even worse than I thought. Fucking hell.

I can somewhat understand how other horrible developments were approved by SCAP, but this whole development raises a lot of questions about our development planning process in Adelaide. Not only are the design and materials completely unsympathetic of North Terrace but the unspoken of (outside of this forum and motorists) horrible traffic management that has also come with this smells of corruption somewhere along the process.
