To quote myself from earlier in this thread...
bm7500 wrote:...As for extending the runway's, there is no real need as the heaviest regular visitor to Adelaide is the 747 which can take off and land without a problem ablbeit not fully laden. The new Airbus A380 will actually use less runway length wise but more width wise. So the next logical step would be to increase the runway shoulder, should A380 services become regular... and thats not likeley to happen for years yet.....
So to clarify, Adelaide is A380 'capable' that means that the runways, taxiways & aerobridges can handle a fully laiden A380 aircraft. However, if regular services started AAL would need to invest a fair bit of capital in widening the runways by about 15 metres each side and also widening the taxi ways so that there is less chance of the engines ingesting runway lights, taxiway signage and small furry animals. hehe

Gate 18 is the designated A380 gate, next time you go to the airport have a look at the Aircraft stop markings on the ground and you will see 'A380' there.

Just for the record, Qantas pick up their first A380 on Friday. Keep an eye on the news on Sunday night as it will arrive to a celebration at Sydney Airport.

Super jumbo's first Adelaide pit stop
September 18, 2008 12:30am

THE world's largest passenger aircraft, the Airbus A380, will make its first visit to Adelaide next week – staying long enough to cool its brakes.

The first Qantas A380 is expected to arrive in Sydney on Sunday morning and land at Adelaide Airport on Saturday, September 27. The giant airliner is due to land at 12.15pm that day, park on the tarmac while its brakes cool and pilots re-set its flight computer, and depart shortly after at 12.40pm.
The Qantas A380 is listed to make a further 14 flights through Adelaide Airport after that – all as part of crew training flights before the plane goes into service later in October.

Its landing and take-off can be viewed from inside the main passenger terminal.

Photographers can get a good view from the observation area at the western end of the main runway, by Tapleys Hill Rd.

The A380 is due back in Adelaide on October 4, 5, 7, 9, 12, 15, 16 and 17, some of those dates having two visits a day.

Neither Qantas or Singapore Airlines – which was the first to bring the A380 into service – have plans for regular services to Adelaide, the super jumbo being significantly larger than the Boeing 747.

I flew over to Adelaide for a brief stop last week with work and a guy from Sydney who had never been to Adelaide before commented on our arrival at the terminal saying "wow, nice welcome for travelers" and I immediately thought how first impressions are so crucial.

I was on a Singapore Airlines A380 about 2 months ago from Heathrow to Singapore. They are incredible. So much quieter than anything else currently flying and much more room too. However I was a bit surprised when we disembarked through first class to see the suites aren't fully enclosed. The surround is only about 5 foot high.

Also, the was a small article in today's Sunday Mail saying AAL are in talks with Garuda Indonesia to re-establish direct flights from Adelaide to Bali in the long-term. It also said that Virgin's international offshoot will be flying Adelaide to Bali by the end of the year. Interesting.....

I feel a tropical holiday coming on :D :D :D

Yes it is a National Jet Boeing 717 and it is being leased to Hawian Airlines. It was flown back from Richmond Base last week after being repainted :)

You can see a picture of it here: http://www.jetphotos.net/viewphoto.php?id=6357746

It's real! The plane's banking slightly to the left in preperation for landing at the top of Glen Osmond Rd.

No, it's fake ;)

Yeah the fact that Santos House is still in the picture should give it away.

The pic is straight from the Qantas website. They have done them for most of the capital cities.
