In a way I don't want this to go ahead because it would threaten our hours or maybe even our jobs, but at the same time I do want it to happen because it is such a great opportunity!
Small world Deano, I use to work for Stirling at that store and Marion a year or so back. In regards to threatening your job, I'm sure a temporary or different location will be organised just like Harris Scarfe is planning to.

I really hope some tenants are filled in the near future or are already on the process, this building will have a really great effect on the eastern side of town.

I like the Rundle Mall facade. The 4 storey old building looks like something out of old cowboy/indian movie in a wild western town. Looks cool

Yeah, I would be quite happy if they could manage to keep that old 4-story facade too, so long as they can blend it in.

We have plenty of bldgs from that era - I am all for the development - a compromise could be reached to retain the facade in the new bldg. (as was done on one bldg on the western side of VSQ. - I think in the 1980's.). There seems to be such a resistance to development as a whole.

The petition says it is "Adelaides last surviving operating department store".

That's news to me! I thought there was also a Myer and a David Jones in Rundle Mall, not to mention many other suburban department stores if they meant metropolitan Adelaide.

It's a dump with no significant heritage value except to those who absolutely love the history of Harris Scarfe, and I've never yet met anyone who does!

Wow, certainly a small world after all! He's a top bloke Stirling, so surely he'd have some sort of plan in place for when we do get booted out for construction.

I think they mean last original dept store building, the others having been all knocked down or turned into something else. That said the only interesting bits are the façade on Rundle Mall and the cool brick warehouse façades down Linde's Lane an Francis Street. If they can incorporate the Rundle façade as part of the setback for the mall side an do something engaging with the warehouse parts as a funky laneway I' d be happy. If not oh well...

But the stupid thing is that the time for thinking about that was a couple of years ago when the new building was at the design stage.

Now the final plan has been approved and yet there's still debate over whether the facades should be kept etc (not just on this forum but apparently it seems to be what's holding up the actual development).

This is not the only project where this sort of thing has happened and it seems to me to be one of the reasons why everything takes so long to happen in Adelaide.

Surely there should be a public debate about the design BEFORE it is finalised and presented to council etc for approval, not after the go-ahead has already been given!

I'm not having a go at anyone here by the way, it's just a general comment because I've seen it happen a lot with other projects.

I totally agree with you pushbutton, it feels like the ACC approvals mean nothing these days. Its like allowing someone to pass through a gate but keep the gate locked. If they're going to approve something, at least compromise the controversy or disregard it completely beforehand and get a few tenants backing it up.
Its happened with Currie st, Spire, this, and i'm fearing the Hindley project is going down that road.

For the 500th time in this thread:
The only things stopping the commencement of construction are commercial reasons (finance, precommitment, existing leases - take your pick), not the ACC.

The only ACC approval the project is waiting for is authority to alter the existing approval to add extra floors to the already approved design. As far as I'm aware this does not prevent commencement on the already approved plan.

Thanks for that mate - I think I've got it now!
But seriously AtD, I appreciate your input on the forum.

i thought we were on about architectural facades of departmental stores in the latter parts of this thread - and in that case there is Moores, one on the north side of Hindley St about 80 m in from KWS intersection (Miller Anderson's) .
