One small sign of hope of revival in the area...Now is someone could just do the same to the Port Admiral Hotel on the corner.....Publican Tony Bond reopens Port Adelaide’s Railway Hotel after former owners called last drinks in March

BEER will flow again at Port Adelaide’s historic Railway Hotel following a city publican’s decision to buy the 158-year-old building.
Tony Bond, the owner of The New Edinburgh Castle Hotel in Currie St, bought the St Vincent St pub this month.
He will settle on the sale, which also includes five gaming machine licenses, this week and reopen the pub in October.
Allan Brenton shared a beer with grandson Clayton Revie as last drinks were called in March. Picture: Tricia Watkinson.
Former owners Fred Hiscock and his partner Sue O’Reilly called last drinks in March because they had struggled to find a buyer for more than four years.
The pub’s reopening comes despite a declining hospitality industry in the area which has resulted in the closure of five historic pubs — The Colac Hotel, Golden Port Tavern, Port Admiral Hotel, Buff’s Black Diamond Hotel and?Clubhouse Hotel — in the past five years.
Mr Bond said he was investing in Port Adelaide as he believed it was on the verge of “bouncing back”.
“We want to be part of the community and I think the Port is a beautiful area and you can’t find these type of buildings anywhere else,” Mr Bond said.
“The real estate prices are relatively cheap so that is also a good lure for people.
“The inside is beautifully preserved and a lot of friends have told me I’m mad for buying it, but it’s a great area with potential and I think the effort will be worth it.”
Mr Bond said the hotel would focus on “good, cheap food” and local products including SA beers such as Coopers.
He will hire former Railway Hotel bar manager Janette Blucher, who has been unable to gain full-time employment since the pub closed.
Ms Blucher, 51, was grateful for the chance to return to her old job.
“I’ve got 20 years experience at that building and it is harder for people my age to get jobs so it will be good,” the Rosewater resident said.
“I hope the pub gets back to what I remember when I first started there in about 1994 when the line was pretty deep to get a beer.
“And I think Tony will bring something a little different to the area and hopefully it takes off and we see some activity.”

From the Messenger:
Hans Ehmann’s Quest apartments plan for Port Adelaide Fisherman’s Market site a step closer following design approval

Artist impressions of the proposed five-storey serviced apartments at Port Adelaide's Fishermen's Markets.
A $16 MILLION plan to build serviced apartments at Fishermen’s Wharf is gaining momentum.
The Environment, Resources and Development Court granted developer Hans Ehmann planning approval on Christmas Eve.
Plans for the five-storey building were lodged with the state’s Development Assessment Commission in May 2013.
DAC members rejected the plans several times because the proposal was deemed to be out of keeping with the historic area.
Members also argued the 60-apartment building blocked views of the Birkenhead Bridge.
Mr Ehmann sought planning approval from the ERD Court after another delay late last year.
The plans now need development approval from the DAC.
Mr Ehmann told the Portside Messenger he expected development approval to be granted within six months.
“This is by far the largest privately-funded development to happen in the Port in the last 45 years,” Mr Ehmann said.
Victorian company Quest will be the building’s tenant and will service the apartments.
Quest manages apartment blocks in every Australian capital city and six in South Australia.
Port Adelaide Enfield Mayor Gary Johanson and other civic leaders say the plans will give the Port a boost.

At least the new renders look half way decent...DAC members rejected the plans several times because the proposal was deemed to be out of keeping with the historic area.

and as for "blocking the view of the Birkenhead Bridge"...well shouldn't that be a positive !
2 baby steps forward in the development of Port Adelaide.
Re: Port Adelaide | Developments & News
Looks a little better painted, but still just an awful prefab box that would look better in Salisbury or Elizabeth. But I suppose it's better than nothing at all

Re: Port Adelaide | Developments & News
It's still the same junk that get's repeated in the city, just shorter. The usual painted pre-fab, with some irregularly placed box frames around groups of windows.
Given it's only 5 levels, could they not clad the entire building in brick (rather than just parts of the ground level)? It would at least then look somewhat in place with the industrial parts of Port Adelaide. (Either that, or just leave the pre-fab concrete unpainted. At least then there's some texture and a chance to develop a patina over time.)

Re: Port Adelaide | Developments & News
This is the development that will involve demolishing the markets right? I still think that's a big mistake. The markets are rundown yes, but at the moment they are one of the few attractions drawing people into Port Adelaide.
Re: Port Adelaide | Developments & News
This development will be to the north of the markets.
However, the markets are owned by the same people.

A GRAND plan to bring a fish market to the heart of Port Adelaide may be one step closer to becoming reality.
Port Adelaide Enfield Mayor Gary Johanson wants to move the Torrens Island Market from Gillman to the Port.
Market organisers have backed the plan and say it would boost fresh seafood and produce sales because of the prime location.
The move would act as the first step in building a large-scale seafood market, similar to the booming Sydney Fish Market.
Mr Johanson said he would ask Tourism Minister Leon Bignell – who he has been embroiled in a public stand-off with – for State Government support.
“I’m very close to being able to present to the minister the potential to have the (Torrens Island) Market in the Port itself with fresh vegetables, fresh fruit and fresh fish,” Mr Johanson said.
“It will bring a minimum of 10,000 people every Sunday to the Port and once that is firmly entrenched in the Port, it forms a catalyst to demonstrate a need and a desire for a bigger fish market.”
Mr Johanson said he had “two or three potential sites” for the 55-stall market but would not name locations.
He said he first wanted to meet with Mr Bignell when he returned from his trip to the G’Day USA event in Los Angeles.
Mr Johanson and ward councillors Ray Guscott and Claire Boan met with two Torrens Island Market committee members last month to gauge their support.
Committee member Rick Albanese supported the move but said stallholders would only agree if “better facilities” were offered.
“We would want to move,” Mr Albanese said.
“It’s right in the middle of Port Adelaide and where we are now, no one knows where it is.”
The State Government tried to attract the Torrens Island Market to Hart’s Mill in 2013 but organisers declined the invite, saying the setup would not be an improvement on their existing location.
The invite was part of the government’s $2 million revamp of the mill precinct, which included a market area, festival space and play equipment.
Mr Bignell first pitched the idea of a major fish market on the docks of the Port in November.
He attacked the council and Mr Johanson as “lazy” for not doing anything about it and not presenting him with tourism ideas to fund.
The two politicians have not met since his comments and both have wanted the other to make the first move.
Mr Bignell was unavailable for comment.

Great idea.
On a side note, the brilliant Wonderwalls Festival art work has brought interest back to the port. Definitely recommend checking it out!

So cool.

Re: Port Adelaide | Developments & News
Local icon, the Port Admiral Hotel has recently sold and will be reborn as a vibrant gateway to the Port. This iconic building will be undergoing extensive renovations to create three ground floor business opportunities and restore the personality of this historic site.
The new owners are looking at creating a retail space, a corner bar/hospitality offering and a shopfront on Commercial Rd which could be home to a much needed fish and chip shop! For more information on the proposed tenancies and spaces available, please visit their website.
Renewal SA and business attraction partner, the Adelaide Business Hub, worked together with the new owners as they made their way through the purchasing process. We were able to assist with providing local business knowledge and work through their business plan to strengthen their offer. We also acted as facilitators to support the purchaser’s end vision for this building and ensure that it is in keeping with the Precinct Plan, respectful of the building’s heritage and reflective of the surrounding precinct’s character.
Keep an eye on our news feed for more information as this exciting project progresses and if you are interested in leasing a space in this highly visible and iconic space, please visit http://www.portadmiral.com

Yeah, because the Port needs more retail space. It's not like there is any laying around not being used. The Scooter Guy wrote:Local icon, the Port Admiral Hotel has recently sold and will be reborn as a vibrant gateway to the Port. The Adelaide developers who have sights set on Port Adelaide.
SOME of Adelaide’s biggest property developers are looking to snap up parcels of waterfront Port land earmarked to go under the hammer.
At least two major construction companies, one of which built the $200 million SAHMRI building in the CBD, are considering developing some of the State Government-owned land.
Planning Minister John Rau wants to sell six parcels of land to generate up to $2 billion worth of investment.
