smh, it shrunk
Nope, I think you'll find this proposal is much bigger than what is on site at the moment.

I've always thought that a museum of South Australian history is something that's been lacking. We don't spend enough energy teaching kids & newcomers about what's come before us here. The closest we've had until now is some of the Aboriginal exhibits in the SA Museum, parts of the Migration Museum & the occasional library exhibit, too.

Not sure a skyscraper is the best place for it, however.

I love the section of the Melbourne Museum showing off the history of the city. Always wanted something similar here.

Hey all, this was the announcement I was talking about. We've been working on the AMOSAH concept for a fair while now actually and yes, the state is absolutely missing a cultural center that explores recent history. The exiting part is Pelligra's involvement. Ross is a fantastic bloke and we are really pleased to be working with him on bringing this to life.

One past comment on the number of levels and height - it's 183m tall and yes all the AMOSAH levels are double height, so is the sky lobby. The ground floor height is massive at nearly 27m high to maintain the presence of the original hall and the observatory on top will also be three stories tall. As for location for a museum, well I really want it for our state and I happen to be managing the development for a project on 254 north terrace.
When we worked on the potential locations with the History Trust they did explore other locations.
Parklands = murder/suicide.
Suburban areas = no visitors.
CBD? Where else?

The appeal of integrating a museum into a building like this is that it becomes a "one stop culture stop" - come for the observatory, stay for the history of our great state. Plus if you walk out the front and across the road you can enjoy our existing SA museum, Library, Art Gallery, Space Museum, Botanic gardens, Adelaide Zoo - all super close and with a tram out the front to get to the Casino and all the great Rundle street dining options out the back.

I can see a lot of people staying here and at the Crown next door to spend 2-3 full days without leaving that corner of the city!

There was another comment on the concern of waiting forever for the Government to get on board with AMOSAH - yes, that's out of our hands, they don't have to do it of course and we have alternatives but it would be a shame if we missed the opportunity to bring to life something I really think we need as a city and a state.

That would be me 🙂

I really appreciate the visibility you're giving us into how this is shaping up. It's such an ambitious project not just for its engineering but the business case itself, bringing in such a wide variety of uses under a single roof. With those opportunities come risks, especially when you operate with a mix of private and public stakeholders who don't necessarily work on the same timelines to meet a single project timeline. I kind of envy that task as much as I fear it. It's obvious that you would consider a plan b if the govt can't make good on their part. But I wonder, are there many alternatives that would match the form factor for that part of the building, or would it need a rethink and design change to accommodate another use? Not really an answer I'm expecting of you - you've already shared so much 🙂 but fascinating just to even think about the complexities here.

Man wouldn't it be funny if JWDT see this, come back to the table, renegotiate height for 207 pultney, to be taller than this masonic lodge

Just like by a metre or so for bragging rights

Didn't that situation play out between Realm and Crown Plaza?

207 Pulteney has the advantage in that they could go taller if they wanted to because the airspace height limit regulations are marginally higher there whereas Masonic Lodge has gone has high as it can possibly go.

I know the AMoSAH is 5 double levels so 10 levels in height. It is probably 38 levels still including just 5 for the museum.
original plan was 33 levels and 33,000 square metres

Masons would have to work that in somehow

Dunno about those two, but I've heard it happened when Adelaide Uni found out how tall the UniSA building in the biomed precinct was going to be

Yes it's significant and very complex, our approach has been to pick the best partners we could as early as possible and to bring forward every complexity and challenge early. To be honest the most common thing I hear back from consultants and Gov/Council is "no one usually thinks that far ahead". We were incredibly fortunate to have one of the hotel partners provide their entire technical drawing set before we've even signed a HOA and that has given us an incredible design advantage way ahead of lodging DA. We've also been working as collaboratively as we can with every stakeholder.
Some developers seem to see council as the enemy. I just think that's crazy, there are some very smart people in there and they want to help if you just listen to them.

We don't really think of the government as "making good". They have a lot of priorities and a lot of pressures from all sides, I'll just keep pestering :D

That would be awesome, they can spend the money on lifting the pans ops and then we'll just do an amendment
In all seriousness it's pretty hard to go higher without changing the core structure of the building (eg moving from core-outrigger to tube, braced tube eg exoskeleton)

I can’t see an AMOSAH museum taking up 5 double-height levels of a building. That’s enormous. Especially for a museum the SA government haven’t even committed to.
