If we think that having retractable seating in a multi-purpose stadium in our CBD (that would be oval during winter and rectangular during summer), take a look at Ford Field in Detroit, Michigan that host basketball as well as NFL games.

Yeah they do that at a lot of baseball stadiums across North America. They wheel out smaller stands for the basketball and cover the artificial turf with a platform to hold the basketball surface.
Big difference is AFL is played on grass. Which is the sticking point, grass dies without sunshine.

Well, we could always use Astroturf.

Ford Field can be configured for basketball (and seats 80,000 when they do), but they only do that for special events like that NCAA tournament (roughly speaking, the finals of the college basketball season). The Detroit Pistons play at The Palace of Auburn Hills
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Palace_of_Auburn_Hills, which at 22,000 seats is the biggest in the NBA.

I am happy enough with Football Park. Having driven through Melbourne CBD during the AFL season on a Friday night, the gridlock went on forever near Telstra Dome - and I mean an hour to move a km. Having 20-30,000 additional cars rolling into the CBD, trying to gate a carpark would be pretty tough unless the roads were redone.
Anyway it's not going to happen, the hospital will be fast tracked and Adelaide oval will be expanded. That's the reality and no funds will be made available for another stadium if Foley is cutting back on school and prison infrastructure projects.

Now I suggested that a while ago and was pelted with footballs by the "don't be stupid you can't play AFL on astroturf" brigade. I don't understand all this sport stuff.
(Although I think it's something to do with the bare legs and arms and artificial turf ... something something)

Anyone else think that the State Govts credit crunch induced belt tightening will include a certain $100m allocated to our foremost critically injured stadium?

True, however if we were to build a multi-purpose stadium (similar to that of ANZ Stadium in Sydney), it wouldn't be reconfigured that often; in winter it would be in an oval shape for Aussie Rules, they would then change it to host soccer/rugby during the summer. There may of course be some International Soccer Matches (or even International Rules Football) to be played during winter, but for the rest of the time, the stadium's seating wouldn't be reconfigured that often, so it's not like we'll be ripping up grass, etc. week in, week out.

Oh okay then! Let's just go and build a stadium up at Elizabeth because they have a pretty big shopping centre. FOR GOODNESS SAKE!!!
BTW, in case you haven't noticed, 'CBD' stands for
CENTRALbusiness district, therefore it is about as
central as it gets, which therefore means that
everybody's happy, not just the sheep that go up to AAMI week in, week out AND of course the people that live north of Grange Road, west of Churchill Road and south of Outer Harbour! if you ask me, I reckon the SANFL is scared of the global sport that is just beginning to stretch its wings in Australia...

I'm noticing a strong anti Aussie rules football sentiment around the country atm, like on internet forums, newspaper/radio feedback. Yes soccer is a global sport, but it is so unique that we play our own distinctive sport only in a few states of 1 country, that attracts crowds of between 30,000 - 80,000 just for home n away games. I find it fascinating and something that we should be proud of, compared to say Canada, who is almost apart of USA culture in every way, and not much uniqueness such as our country.
There seems to be a few people around OZ that want Aussie rules to fail (dont really know why), but I dont think it ever will, even if we dont build a stadium close to city.
I dont mind Football Park, but it is in a dumb spot. Also, Westfield West Lakes spent quite a lot on developing a foodcourt near the eastern entrance, which just happens to be the entrance closest to the stadium, when they knew of Sunday trading. If anyone has ever visited this food court before games, its is absolutely crammed full of footy followers, which I think Westfield predicted. So stadiums do generate further economic activity in the surrounding areas. I wish we do get an inner city stadium, but Im not sure its a priority.

I think Melbourne is building its new rectangular stadium for something like $125m. It'll seat 25,000 or so. That's pretty good value - a whole stadium - when you look at the AAMI Stadium facelift by comparison.

Yes i'm one of those "few" people who would luuv to see this silly sport die a quick death in Adelaide
(bit harsh, but that's how i feel), after all it's a stupid Victorian game, i'm sure people remember the VFL
It's a sport that i find hard to watch, but sports like Rugby and soccer always seem to make me want to watch a whole game.
But AAMI stadium has nothing wrong with it, and the $100million facelift plus the tram/rail line to it will make this stadium look much better, but if people still call it a shit stadium, then IMO that's all a shit sport deserves...
