I'm still amazed that there's been no attempt at setting up a Woolworths Metro or Coles Express at the Adelaide Railway Station (or in the underpass / Station Arcade).

Totally agree - they would make a fortune. They would get half of my weekly grocery spend and I'm guessing similar for many of the thousands who use the station every day.

I note though that the revised signs appear to show a design nearly as tall (14 storeys) as the 16 storey proposal defeated as too high.

It's only worth a supermarket opening past 9pm if there's actually people around to frequent them and quite considerable parts of the CBD are pretty desolate after 9pm from Sunday to Thursday. Anecdotally, I went to the Coles on Grote St a few times around 1-2am during the week when it used to open from 12am, it was not busy.

Re the discussion above. Like it or not, the very large OTR on West Terrace would fill much of the after 9pm needs of the western part of the city, at exorbitant prices of course. But it does have the advantage of convenient parking spaces making it easy to duck in and out.

It’s a fair walk from the east end to OTR west terrace.
Also there’s a lot of things such as meat which you can’t get from a petrol station.

And why should Petrol stations be given an advantage when they are basically owned by criminals ?

You can blame the anti-progressive Labor government for that. The Libs tried to introduce legislation to de-regulate our pathetic and archaic trading laws, but Labor were against it at every step of the way. It's embarrassing explaining to people from interstate and overseas that all major shops are forced to shut at 5pm in the city on weekends.

"Petrol stations" are given an advantage because convenience stores that sell fuel are under more relaxed trading rules than convenience stores that don't sell fuel. I can't find an answer better than "history" for why this should be the case. Labor don't want to relax the trading hours for other businesses, and nobody wants the hassle of restricting the current rules further.

I don't believe the sale of fuel has anything to do with it. It's based on the floor space of the store. So IGAs and petrol stations are free to open whenever but coles/woolworths can not.

The list of kinds of exempt shops include cafea and restaurants, bookshops, pharmacies, florists, tobacconists, agricultural machinery, trailers, caravans, (but not cars) and petrol stations (amongst other things).

Reading that page is a good argument for reform and simplification of SA's trading laws, no matter which way you would want them to move. I wonder what the historic reason for three Proclaimed Shopping Districts in rural areas are - Binnum (includes Frances and Kybybolite), Grace (includes Mallala) and Millicent.
