This forum is still the only place I have read that the hospital is not going ahead. Can somebody point me to a public document to this effect?
cheers,
Rhino

As with alot of topics on this forum and indeed on the internet in general, this is only hearsay and would surely have little basis in truth. It does appear odd that the State Government have been quiet on this one though...

I have a pamphlet from Mike Rann / Tom Toutsantonis re Budget 2008 that mentions the big ticket items that have
been delivered or on the way - Bakewell underpass, Port River Bridges, South Rd U/pass by name, but hospitals just
get "$333 million over 4 years towards building better hospitals" - no specific mention of Marj or any other.

(pamphlet arrived last week)

Thanks Xaragmata. However, I'm afraid I still don't read that as "the hospital will not go ahead".

I thought they're currently cleaning up the Railyards... or maybe they're waiting on the next election on what will be built there.

Neither do I, and I wouldn't expect you to, but I would expect them to trumpet the Marj if they were
serious about it, and ready to roll. The thing is titled "Budget 2008 Action Now for the FUTURE".
Oops, typo - should be Koutsantonis.

Looks serious enough for them to be spending this money.

http://www.news.com.au/adelaidenow/stor ... 82,00.html
CONSULTANTS likely to cost more than $17 million have been hired by the Rann Government to work on the new Marjorie Jackson-Nelson Hospital.

A further $10 million has already been spent on consultancies for the proposed super schools and prison precinct projects.

The total spending on consultants will grow to $41 million by 2011-12.

This is despite promises by Labor before and after the 2002 state election they would "slash" consultancy costs.

Until the Government decided the new hospital was going to be a public-private partnership, the consultancy costs were projected to be $136 million. Thirteen consultants including a flight-path adviser, health planners, engineering and security experts will be working on the $1.7 billion dollar project.

Parliament Budget and Finance Committee chairman and Liberal MP Rob Lucas said that when in Opposition, Premier Mike Rann and Treasurer Kevin Foley had attacked consultancy spending and had pledged to cut it if they won government.

"Mr Rann and Mr Foley were very critical of the former Liberal government when it spent about $100 million – while earning about $5.4 billion for SA – from the electricity privatisation," he said.

Mr Foley's spokesman said the Government was not spending $136 million on consultants. It would be a public-private partnership which would mean consultants' fees would be an estimated $17.7 million.

Did anyone see that article in... Saturday's paper I think it was about the pilot ward that they want to build as part of the new Howard Florey :D (not MJN) Hospital?
I take back many of the things I said before 2010; particularly my anti-Rann rants. While I still maintain some of said opinions, I feel I could have been less arrogant. I also apologise to people I offended; while knowing I can't fully take much back. :)

It's still the Marj. I just looked at the article myself, and there's no mention of a name change.
These 'pods', I can't help come to think that they'll look like this :P

If the new hospital does go ahead, what do people here think of the idea of extending the parklands over the top of it, in a similar way to the lawns of Parliament House, Canberra?

Marjorie Jackson-Nelson hospital size reduced

JOANNA VAUGHAN POLITICAL REPORTER

November 05, 2008 03:20pm

THE size of the planned Marjorie Jackson-Nelson Hospital could have been reduced by up to 20 per cent, it has been revealed.

Health Minister John Hill today confirmed the hospital building, that was originally going to be 170,000 square metres, had been revised down to about 150,000 or 155,000sq m.

However, Australian Medical Association state president Dr Peter Ford told ABC radio he had been made aware the size had decreased to 140,000sq m.

"The hospital, as we understood it, was going to be 170,000sq m, but more recently a figure of 140,000 has been suggested," he said.

"That's a matter, a point we have made to the department (of health) that we have concerns that there may be a collision of costing versus size."

Mr Hill said the Government was trying to plan the hospital in the most efficient way possible.

"What we are doing is designing a building that fits in all the things we need in a hospital," he said.

"We are looking at the clinical spaces and the best way of putting them together.

"We don't start off with a size and say what can we put in that size. We start off with needs and work out what is the best way of putting those needs together.

"If you were to rebuild the RAH you are constrained by the existing footprint and the existing buildings and you have to make things fit in that envelope.

"It's not about reducing the number of services ... it's about building in the most efficient way we can."

Opposition Leader Martin Hamilton-Smith dubbed it the 'Mini-Marj" and demanded the Rann Government come clean on the cost, size, timing and funding of the project.

"This comes just weeks after the Government released a ministerial development plan amendment for public consultation that claimed an 'estimated floor space of 170,000sq m' and a cost of $1.7 billion," he said.

"Clearly, costs have blown out, the project is now shrinking and there is doubt about how it will be funded.

"Two years after Cabinet first signed off on this idea, we now find it was badly conceived, poorly developed and impossible to line up against a proposed redevelopment of the current Royal Adelaide Hospital."

It's time for Mini Martin to STFU. What does he have to offer? You want to build a stadium you tool.
