I'm not against deregulated shopping hours, however the problem I have with it, is how are we going to protect workers from not being forced to work at hours and dates when they don't want to?

If we can come up with safeguards to protect retail workers, then I fully embrace deregulated shopping hours.

I have no intention to stop you from doing whatever you want to do in your time. Why do you want to stop other people from doing the same thing? If they want to shop 24 hrs why should that be a problem to you? Nobody is suggesting that you have to do it if you don't want to.

About the argument that people have to work around the clock rain or shine; I don't think the idea is that anybody should have to do it against their will. And if you don't like the hours try some other job (I've worked lousy hours too but it was my own choice so I didn't complain). If the conditions don't match the reward people will go somewhere else. It's called freedom of choice and although it might not suit everybody that's not a valid reason to take it away from those who do like it.

RUNDLE Mall is set to receive $30 million worth of upgrades from next year, with Town Hall committing funds to redevelop the city’s premier shopping strip.

The council last night (Tuesday, November 22) pledged to invest $30 million in the mall over three years from 2012/13 to undertake detailed design and start delivering on the $60 million Rundle Mall master plan.

The council also hopes to secure an additional $10 million from the State Government or private investors.

Rundle Mall Management Authority member and Cr Houssam Abiad, who called for the funds to be committed to the mall, said committing $30 million would entice investors, promote development and boost the council’s rates income.

The Rundle Mall Management Authority, including general manager Martin Haese and chairman Theo Maras, packed the gallery to hear the debate.

The master plan, unveiled in October, includes a rooftop cinema, entryways at each end of the mall, new paving and lighting and a seated stage, TV screens and a Federation Square-style hub.

At the time, the council said it would allocate $17 million over the next three to four years to help transform the mall.

Does anyone know if it's possible to transplant and relocate a plane tree? The ones in Rundle Mall aren't that big. Would be a shame to lose them.

Off topic, but that was another stupid sensationalist headline from the esteemed Murdoch Press! What that was really about was nature conservation - retaining hollows that are much needed by a lot of our native fauna and birds. They turned a positive story into .... shite.

Completely agree! But I have a funny feeling we'll get some raised garden beds, new paving and some crappy street art for $30million.
