[COM] Memorial Drive upgrade
[COM] Re: Memorial Drive upgrade
Am I the only one that thinks this is a colossal waste of time and money. Why not redevelop the site into something for the long term that can host commonwealth games matches ect. This is a short term cosmetic fix but an expensive one.

Short sighted, visionless garbage.

Correct me if Im wrong, but I believe this was necessary at a minimum probably, to gain that ATP tournament we recently got.
Theres no reason why they cant build a new arena over the carpark with courts on top, and then demolish the gym and this monstrosity.

Agreed, Ben.
They should have located the centre court matches for ATP tournament at Adelaide Entertainment Centre or in the Jubilee Pavilion at the showgrounds meanwhile bulldozing this whole space for a new centre.

Granted you probably could have played the ATP tournament at the AEC or at Wayville in the interim, but who says you can't build an arena under this new roof? There's options here. Do you know for certain they won't go deep? That way they can extend the seating area and you'll easily fit 8,000 to 10,000 seats. As a tennis stadium they only need one court so there is plenty of room. If they leave room for two courts even better for other indoor sports. It's also possible they can go even lower and fit an underground carpark under a lowered court. So there's plenty of potential here. Of course a brand new arena from scratch is what we all want, but do you have the cash for it right now? Let's use our heads fellas.Patrick_27 wrote: ↑Sun Sep 08, 2019 7:32 pmAgreed, Ben.

Cheers
P.S. Also anything that can be bolted together can also be dismantled.

I believe this is temporary infrastructure that can be repurposed elsewhere in the greater Memorial drive upgrade zone.

Memorial Drive steels itself for summer tournament
Richard Evans, 26 September 2019, The Advertiser
ALMOST eight months after a taxpayer funded, $10 million upgrade of one of South Australia’s most well known sports facilities was announced, a major leap forward was taken yesterday.
State Premier Steven Marshall was on hand to witness the first of six, 50 tonne trusses, each 78.5m long, to be erected across the north to south length of Memorial Drive’s showpiece tennis court.
A further “canoe” truss will be put up every five days until the roof structure is completed late next month said Tennis Australia’s major projects chief, Lynton Franzi.
“Each truss has to be transported down from SA Structural in Edinburgh between 1am and 3am. There’s a police escort and it takes about one and a half hours,” he said.
Each truss is brought down in three pieces which are then assembled on site before they are put in place by Adelaide construction outfit, Kennett Builders.
Cox Architecture, which was behind the adjacent Adelaide Oval redevelopment, is behind the upgrade design.
The stadium revamp will be completed later this year in time for the inaugural, $2 million prize money Adelaide International, men’s and women’s tennis tournament which will take place at Memorial Drive from 12 January to 18 January, 2020.
Wimbledon champion Simona Halep has already committed to playing in Adelaide.“I am getting very excited about bringing international tennis back to Memorial Drive,” Premier Marshall said. The revamped stadium will leave a strong, training legacy given its undercover status, a first for SA, Mr Marshall said.

I think the new roof is going to compliment the Adelaide Oval quite well when it’s finished.

Great tribute to the Riverbank stand. Hope they light it up at night to reflect the Oval lighting too. Would look great from the south bank and bridge.

Inspired by Stryker, I went for a good look during my lunch break:
Thought these last two photos show how well the roof compliments Adelaide Oval.
