I agree with you Edgar. If the ACC is serious about achieving their population targets, they have to get rid of their ridiculous and archaic height restrictions. At least in the CBD core region!

New ad campaign tells Britons to 'screw' UK and come to Adelaide

AN AGGRESSIVE advertising campaign has been launched in the UK to entice disgruntled Britons to "stuff" London and emigrate to sunny Adelaide.

Under the not-so-subtle headings Sod London House Prices, Screw Working in Staines, Stuff London Traffic and Bugger it, I’m off to Adelaide, the adverts promise a life in paradise.

They offer “fine weather, fine wine, fine houses, fine jobs, fine beaches and fine universities” to the students and skilled workers they are hoping to attract to South Australia.

A campaign spokesman said: “It’s a stand-off challenge for people to stick two fingers up to the UK and reach out for better business prospects, better health care, higher-quality education, warmer weather, lower house prices – overall a far superior way of life.”

Despite the housing pain South Australians are currently feeling, the ad campaign flags up our low cost of housing.

A three-bedroom house with double garage and swimming pool at Aldinga Beach, just 35 minutes’ drive from Adelaide, costs £111,500, ($A240,000) the ad boasts.

The ad continues to wax lyrical about our low rents, average summer temperatures of 28c and winter temperatures of 16c and population of just 1.58million.

Pity they show an old photo of Glenelg

It would be great if they extended that campaign to Ireland and mainland Europe. They should also highlight how depressing it is that the sun sets at 4:00pm in winter.

Yes, in the northern parts (that is, past the Arctic Circle) during most of summer the sun doesn't set. The reverse happens in winter (the sun never rises). But these areas are not greatly populated. Here in Stockholm during summer it never really gets dark, it's just a sort of twilight for the majority of the night. In winter the sun typically sets around 3pm until the solstice, at which point it sets later and later each day until summer. At the moment it's setting just a little past 4pm.

It's only really in November and early December that the darkness can be bothersome, because it's just so grey. However, it brightens up wonderfully when there's snow on the ground (which has sadly been missing, at least here, for the last couple winters - blame climate change).

A good news story:

FYI, we are an Adelaide family who lived in sydney for a decade and moved back home a few years ago.

Some of our friends (3 families) also went interstate many years ago and recently moved back to Adelaide - citing good jobs prospects, a more relaxed lifestyle, and better place to raise children. But the really good news is they are bringing 3 extra families with them!! These new Adelaide immigrants were born and raised in suburban sydney and are coming here based purely on "all the good news and general vibe they keep hearing about south australia"!

Obviously these numbers aren't large and only represent the people i know personally - could this just be a blip? or maybe the start of a positive trend?

My uncle. He migrated to Melbourne after basing in Kuala Lumpur for almost a decade (before that he was working in Sydney after he finished Uni), and recently moved to Adelaide because I was here. But decided that he may want to consider moving back to Melbourne because Adelaide lifestyle do not suit him.

A point to note that he is more a busy lifestyle kind of person, as evident in his previous settlements of places such as Sydney and Kuala Lumpur.

I, on the other hand, have a more relaxed nature. I hate to be able to only do one thing in a day because of long traveling time + congestion + inaccessibility. I like to be able to get from point to point easily and quickly, and Adelaide is the perfect location for me. I love the beach, I love the coffee (can hardly find nice coffee while I was in Melbourne - over here, you have nice coffee from Cibo in every corner).

What I don't like about Adelaide is the ridiculously slow allowable driving speed. I have received 2 tickets in 3 months. 60kmph zone @ 70kmph, 50kmph zone @ 60kmph. Our road links are pretty badly aligned to residential zones, making most roads and highway limited to 60kmph because houses and shops are so conveniently located just off the kerbs of these so called 'highway'.

Hey Edgar, they are not speeding fines, consider them to be a levy permitting you to drive faster than anyone else!

Funny you mention this. When I was Canberra a few years ago, we had difficulty in finding places to eat! We had to end up eating in Quaenbeyan quite a few times because of this!

Tell me about it, for a place that's famous for being well designed, it's not very well designed! And as for places to eat, I'm yet to find a good Yuros place here. All that I can find is a horrible fast food franchise that is the McDonalds of Kababs. They're on every corner and every centre, and taste horrible! McKababs.

When you think about it us South Aussies really take for granted the amount of restaurants, cafes, hotels, food, wine etc... we have on offer in Adelaide.

Really one the best things I love about Adelaide is the food and drinks - love the central market!

What I meant was they are located so close to these roads, there is not enough side turning lanes for exit/entry points, enough to bring the speed up. E.g. introduction of a third lane to the left for turning into the exiting/entering points of these shops.
