Mawen wrote:... I like the uniqueness of Adelaide, but, I think what I and others are saying (forgive me for being wrong) is to keep that uniqueness but to make Adelaide a more practical, functional and attractive city.

I think building huge skyscrapers is not necessarily the answer; but building unique - functional - practical and sustainable buildings, venues and places unlike the temporary buildings for events like Clipsal and the Beach Volleyball are NOT the answer!

Adelaide needs that extra spark which Brissy and Perth have achieved with their vision of building a modern, practical and functional city.
I agree with this sentiment. The answer is not to rush to build a load of phallic erections. Every major city around the World has done that and in some cases it defines them, but in most cases it just makes them all look the same.

If we want Adelaide to be unique and attractive we need to think about and coordinate the construction of not only tall buildings, but those in combination with functional, practical and attractive buildings, so they all work together as a whole. That's a big ask, but most architects are designers and understand the concepts of harmony and contrast between structures.

Adelaide has a unique opportunity, we weren't visited by the Viagra fairy too often back in the '70-90s and as a result we have an unimposing skyline. Remember, less is more. More is crass. ;)

Jumping on the bandwagon a bit here, I'm not a fan of the giant vibrator buildings, either. Not elegant, not dramatic - just.....odd.

you have a nasty habit of misreading my posts to suit your own argument.

i said "Adelaide has no real vision or no large scale planning"
by international or even national standards, a 1.2km tramline or a 120m building are not really visionary. the tramline, although successful, is far too insignificant to call "visionary". after all, it doesn't even eclipse what we used to have 50years ago by a long shot!

i dont think i ever said darwin would overtake adelaide, i just inferred that darwin was likely to grow faster than hobart or canberra. darwin as a city demands high-rise living, whereas South Australian's prefer to have their own house, backyard, etc.
darwin has two buildings over 90m being constructed as we speak, compared to none in adelaide.

im not being negative, i just don't think we should settle for second best.

and just for the record, im sure if this was proposed in Adelaide, you'd definitely be singing a different song.

While the $31m tramline extension is a small project however is a visionary project because it has now opened up the city west end and southern kws for development. 20-22 Currie St is a very visionary and international design eclipses alot of what is currently being built in not just Adelaide but Australia.

Well whatever you said, none of the cities (Darwin, Hobart, Canberra, Gold Coast etc...) are a threat to Adelaide

Darwin is going through a major boom, we are only starting to. And you know very well there is a strong demand for inner city living in Adelaide.
and just for the record, im sure if this was proposed in Adelaide, you'd definitely be singing a different song.
What do you mean, I've already said the plan is outstanding. And no I wouldn't, we don't even have a building over 150m in the CBD let alone over 250m!. I've already stated what I want too happen on the torrens - low/mid rise apartments with cafes, restaurants, shops and bars.

However Adelaide and Perth have a bad history of grand plans of being dumbed down or never happening.

awesome - that looks fantastic and will rival any harbour I have ever seen in the world. Of course there are bound to be issues and hiccups along the way, but such a grand plan is not-so-subtle hint to the rest of this country. onya Perth - my second favourite city :)

:D

I must applaud Perth as the second Melbourne. Very aggressive in ways to attract attention from overseas, and they would become the second Melbourne in the future and I have no doubts about that.

But heck, I do not want another Melbourne :D

However, I must stress that credits to them over at Perth for being able to come aggressive and not being daunted by anti-development NIMBYs which resulted in a scaled down developments.

If this ranks low on an International scale, then what must the International scale think of us  (especially after we want to build and 'altitiude' apartment tower which we name appropriately seeing as it is so tall and impressive  ).

Adelaide would not even register on their charts. I bet you most international countries have never heard of Adelaide. When people think of Australia, they just think of Sydney or possibly Melbourne. Adelaide needs some unique projects that say 'that's Adelaide' on an international scale like the harbor bridge or opera house in Sydney. I hate to say it, but not even our exiting currie street tower is nationally or internationally impressive (just locally  )
Hopefully our states boom will cause some creative thinking and Adelaide will score some iconic projects.

You are right Frank1. I regularly visit asian countries for work and when I say i'm from Adelaide they have no idea where we are at all...and it would have to be a BIG iconic project for us to become immediately recognisable!

And even then just because we have something BIG and iconic, most people still wouldn't know about us. We'd need to host a lot of internationally televised events to get recognition. Back when we had the F1 Grand Prix Adelaide started to be known around the World. But when we lost that we moved back into the obscure.

Face it, Adelaide is never going to get the recognition of New York, London, Sydney and etc. unless something incredible happens here.

Don't be so hard on Adelaide, I was recently in Vietnam and Laos, and you'd be surprised at how many people know about our fair town ..(not exactly sure how MUCH they know however)...
