I think it's appropriate to step back from Hindley Street from a street level compatibility point of view.

Just a quick google turned up some "triangular designs"



I'm not entirely sure where these buildings are.

I'm pretty sure the first one is located in Toyko.

How cool would it be to have a building like the first one in Adelaide

i think the second one is pretty cool

The first one is in Tokyo and the second one looks like somewhere in London's Docklands and Canary Wharf area.

I just checked my street directory and I'm pretty sure that 64-68 Hindley Street is LC House. LC House is indeed the hideous building with the gold/brown stripes on the facade, but I doubt it was ever used as a cinema or theatre complex. Because if you look at the building's facade from Blyth Street, it appears the LC House is actually not a 60's monstrosity but rather a much older building, a much older building! It appears that LC House, due to the type of stone used is from the 1870s or so. However having said that, many establishments were used around Hindley Street, particularly in the 60's and 70's for arty or pornographic films.

I stumbled across this photo on my travels. Could be the original facade for LC House, or maybe just one of the many facades the building has had over the years.

Wow cheers for posting that. Interesting to see the old State Bank signage on the Bank St motel and ANZ Bank on Hindley Street.

I reckon there should be a billboard on that blank wall and more billboards across the CBD.

This is a fine-sounding proposal. Am I right in thinking that CC1 is of similar height to its rooftop (as opposed to the 99m including its dubious 'spire')? A building of such height will have a significant impact on the skyline, one would think.

I agree! I have always loved the Hyatt lobby ever since I was young, with its polished granite floors, shiny brass and metalic features and trickling waterfalls. I find the lobbies of newer hotels have less of a wow factor than the older ones. The glitzy cavernous hotel lobbies of the 1980s are fast becoming a rarity as many of them are being torn up and modernized (the Grand Hyatt in Melbourne being one of them. It's sadly being destroyed as we speak). That said, the lobby of the Hyatt is looking a little tired and should be spruced up a tiny bit, but not at the expence of its architectural merits.

I would absolutely love it if this new proposed hotel when back a couple decades with its lobby design

How very wise, Mr. Joely; how very wise! I agree with all your sentiments. Lobbies in general are becoming less a physical statement about the company itself, and more a blank space where lifts and doors happen to be.

I don't like the results of the Hilton's lobby update, either. It was much more impressive beforehand.

Thanks for posting that image. Indeed that is not the original facade of LC House but a 1930s attempt to freshen up the building. That art deco facade was replaced by the current facade in the 1960s in another attempt to freshen up the building.

any chance of pulling together a series of photos showing all changes to the building? would be neat to see...

No probs. Its interesting looking at older photos and seeing how Adelaide has changed over the years.

Here what i suspect to be the first form of LC House. It was the premises of E. Fischer, Manufacturing Saddler from 1892 to 1913.
