An article about this in yesterday Advertiser saying this proposal has been cancelled due to being unable to secure finance. They said they may re look at the proposal in a few years when conditions improve.

Demand will be greater in the economic upturn, and that way they can restructure it to suit the increased demand; ie: bigger hotel.

Technically, this hotel development was never cancelled. In the latest issue of Adelaide Airport's Plane Talking they point to renewed interest in the progression of this project next year.

Adelaide Airport Limited have submitted details of a minor variation to the approved hotel plans. The only change is that the orientation of the building will now sit paralell with the T1 building and not at a 45 degree angle from it. This minor ammendment is expected to be approved.
More details here:

Well, that makes more sense.

Agreed - surely less invasive and easier/less expensive to bld. and more efficient in area consumption.

The new master plan for the adelaide airport is released. It shows a new 5-level car park and plaza area in front of terminal 1. And the proposed hotel site is still there to the north. Could not upload the diagrams from the plan, so have included the link.

I suggest we make this the airport construction thread and the other thread the airline news thread.
Anyway, the whole master plan is here:
http://www.aal.com.au/corporate/planning.aspx
There's a couple of renders in the third PDF of the car park that I won't bother copying because, well, it's a car park. It's just a render with generic people, students looking thoughtful, business people looking busy and important, children looking annoying, etc. I didn't bother reading the plan but looked at the purdy pictures.
Anyway, here's a plan:
If anyone has a high res version, it'd be much appreciated if you could share.
It looks like a lot of the general aviation stuff between the terminal and Ikea may be cleared for car park access. And what is the point of the massive pedestrian plaza? So we can have a picnic outside the airport car park?
The hotel is just a pencilled in future idea. It reads as if AAL don't intend to have anything to do with the hotel other than be landlord and expect a third party to build and operate it.

Isn't it a safety thing? Not letting private vehicles too close to the terminal, or something like that.

Except the current departures level road will still be there.

I vaguely recall hearing something about how only certain vehicles like buses and taxis will be able to use that road eventually.

But that is only for drop off, you can't park and leave your vehicle. I suppose it won't stop suicide bombers, but will stop the others who want to self preserve.
