Battle looms over RAH land
THE State Government and Adelaide City Council are embroiled in a new dispute over a 1.2ha land parcel near the site of the new $1.7 billion Royal Adelaide Hospital.
In a letter to the council, Health Department chief executive Tony Sherbon says there is "compelling rationale" to include the council-owned land in the broader hospital site.
But the Adelaide Park Lands Authority has requested legal advice to determine what the council's obligations and rights are surrounding the land.
The council wants the land – which extends along North Tce and Port Rd – to incorporate a "wellness theme . . . including parks and plaza that support activities and respite and strengthen the parklands setting".
In the letter, Dr Sherbon says the land parcel in question is "considered to be under-utilised and does not represent usable public open space".
Councillor Anne Moran yesterday said some members of the authority had described Dr Sherbon's letter as "very snitchy".
"We decided at the meeting of the authority on Thursday that it wouldn't be a good idea to simply hand over the land to the Government," she said.
The authority believes a 42-year lease would be the best option, which would include "conditions ensuring public access, and the majority of the site being landscaped as a park setting".
Its recommendations will be taken to the council for approval.
Dr Sherbon wrote: "The inclusion of the . . . land within the broader hospital site would enable (public-private partnership) participants to deliver an integrated design that achieves a holistic urban design outcome for this important city location."
If the land were not included, "the opportunity to deliver the best urban design outcomes . . . could be lost".
Relations between the council and the Government have been strained since last July, when the Government removed planning powers from the council's Development Assessment Panel for projects worth more than $10 million.

I take back many of the things I said before 2010; particularly my anti-Rann rants. While I still maintain some of said opinions, I feel I could have been less arrogant. I also apologise to people I offended; while knowing I can't fully take much back.

I can't imagine that land being better used than it is now!

To try to put it in some sort of perspective the World Cup is as big as having 2 grand finals a day for a month

I actually like the libs idea (yes I vote Liberal) on face value.
All I know is that the parties need to ensure this occurs in the next 5 years not 10 (either idea).

Interesting maths. Considering the railyards have to be moved anyway because of diesal leaks into the Torrens, etc, I assume that cost is not added to the $1.7 billion.Adelaide Now article wrote:The Government is proposing a brand new $1.7 billion hospital on the old railyards site at the western end of the city to replace the RAH.

Finally some common sense. Please rebuild where it is. If we can currently rebuild the QEH and FMC then surely we can rebuild the RAH. Or has RANN forgotton about the rebuilding options that are currently taking place.
[VIS] Re: #VIS: Royal Adelaide Hospital Rebuild
QEH rebuild has failed horribly, and Flinders sits on a major fault line. So, there!
[VIS] Re: #VIS: Royal Adelaide Hospital Rebuild
How are they going to evacuate a 12 level and 15 level building full of sick people during an emergency?
I'm all for a rebuild but I hope and assume they have factored this into their planning?

flinders was built to accomodate as well, but that really has nothing to do with the RAHShuz wrote:QEH rebuild has failed horribly, and Flinders sits on a major fault line. So, there!

yes, exactly. It makes a good headline, but in the real world, modern hospitals are low-rise because of such possibilities.Ben wrote:How are they going to evacuate a 12 level and 15 level building full of sick people during an emergency?

But surely that's just an organisational issue. Why not just have patients with mobility issues on lower floors, and have research or similar areas on the higher floors.
