I think Jaymz has hit the nail on the head here. We haven't seen anything new down at Glenelg in the last
10 years. It's starting to look run down.
The Haven Inn is not taking bookings from October 9 onwards. So we should see construction next year.

"Glenelg need it" - now I've heard it all... Because every other development of this size in Glenelg has helped the growing problem that is lack of activity during the colder months... And the run-down look you're referring to ghs is mostly at ground level, the taller buildings themselves look fine.

Ummmm.... well it is a beach suburb Patrick, people tend not to go to the beach when it's 14 degrees.

So why else does Glenelg 'need this'? I'm genuinely curious...

I'd still go, I'd just wear warmer clothes. Easy.

A few quick reasons just off the top of my head:
1. Because Glenelg is marketed as a beachside, resort style suburb
2. The much needed private investment our state in general needs more of
3. The increased economic activity such a project would bring to the area
4. Provide some new and decent accommodation for interstate and international tourists at our premier beach side suburb
5. Because you should be able to build a high rise in an area such as Glenelg without too much fuss
6. Because I like it

Apparently this will house a five-star Langham hotel, so that's a good sign for the development.

Sorry for being cynical, but what is your source?
I ask this, because the website for this development hasn't been updated for several months, and still announces that construction will start in "late 2016". Furthermore, their facebook page hasn't been updated since September, and the motel on the site is still taking bookings, extending up to May.

From Australian Business Traveller
Adelaide will welcome Australia's third Langham hotel – and the first in the upscale Langham Place portfolio – when Langham Place, Adelaide opens in mid-2019.
The luxury five-star hotel will offer 140 rooms, including 15 suites and a top floor penthouse, and will form part of the multi-storey Lustro luxury development at the beachside suburb of Glenelg North.
Billed as "Adelaide’s first purpose-built luxury precinct," the mixed-use Lustro development will include a "luxury retail district" and apartments offering "state of the art living."
All Langham Place Adelaide guestrooms and suites will showcase designer interior spaces featuring contemporary finishes and inclusions, as well as panoramic views across the ocean or the Adelaide Hills.

Other than both having strong horizontal lines, I'm not seeing it.
