Adelaide - metro area population 1.32 milllion......density 406 people per square kilometre
Toulouse - metro population 1.3 million............density 3,900 km squared
Paris (city of only, no suburbs !) 2.2 million......density 21,000 per square kilometre
Oklahoma City - metro population 1.37 million...............density 360 per square kilometre
Remove Adelaide Airport from the calculation and the story will be different yet.

Some more population density statistics, getting away from a general metro average to a more specific area..
All numbers sourced from Wikipedia
Adelaide CBD.........1,440 per square kilometre (residential population in the city mile)
Unley Council Area..........2,639 per square kilometre
Glenelg......3,918 per square kilometre
St Kilda, Melbourne...............5,560 per square kilometre
Newtown, Sydney..............9,390 per square kilometre
Pyrmont, Sydney.............13,000 per square kilometre
Kangaroo Point, Brisbane...............6,200 per square kilometre
And finally lets thrown in an Asian density (just so when some stupid NIMBY says "this development will turn Adelaide into Hong Kong")
Kowloon, Hong Kong.................42,000 per square kilometre

That Adelaide CBD density is too low and incorrect. That would put the CBD population as less than 5,000 people which is obviously incorrect. I suspect that the square kilometre area for the CBD includes all the parklands which surround it.

I guess it depends what you are trying to prove. The comparison is to the Unley Council area. If the area of all the city streets and Squares are included in calculating the area, then why shouldn't the parklands as well? They are part of the City of Adelaide, not part of Unley etc. and part of the public open space of the city. You wouldn't calculate the population density of New York by excepting Central Park, or of London by excepting Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens.

I agree with you now after rechchecking the source of my statistics...Wikipedia.
The Wikipedia article article called "the Adelaide CBD" is wrongly titled. It is actually the Adelaide local government area (ie coucil)
So yes the density refers to the CBD, parklands and North Adelaide.
This article should be corrected in Wikipedia......it is really poor general knowledge if someone does not know the difference between the CBD and a council area.
Anyway I did a bit of investigating myself....so here goes my guestimate.
Adelaide City Council population (2017) 23, 396.....North Adelaide population approx 7,000
Equals 16, 396 in the square mile
And 1 square mile equals 2.58 square kilometres
Thus Adelaide CBD residential density is.............6,330 people per square kilomtre
I would be really interested if someone does a number check or searches a different way to check the CBD population.
