LOOKS AWESOME!

Please, please, please be built! At 86m it would be our sixth tallest building, and would help boost our growing southern skyline. Would be wonderful to see something happen on that empty lot, which has been that way for like six years now. It would just be great to have something hide that hideous carpark behind it.

by how good is he
Does the forum think the Optus building could or should converted to residential one day. Maybe by adding balconies etc and changing the exterior colours etc

I don't see any reason why it should. It just needs a touch up to remove the pretty foul white to yellow gradient.

I agree

A face lift and that building could remain "iconic", especially given the location right next to tram stops and park lands.

This is a great proposal and - not withstanding all the usual conditions about it going ahead - would be a great landmark that I think would cement the southern end of the CBD as well and truly having arrived. It would also set the scene for (hopefully) future developments of a similar calibre and scale.

In some ways it's a good example of how disappointment has led (potentially) to a better outcome... witness the tale of the Quest building just up from this and the original proposals compared with what we got, and now look at this site - the Hills project, followed by hints of a six/seven level thing and then this. Wow.

Also re: the 'Optus' building. I agree with those who say it has aged very well... it's still quite attractive, no doubt because it is windowed on all four sides and it really captures the light well at sunset (I can see it from my townhouse). The fact almost everyone calls it the 'Optus' building when it no longer wears that signage is testament that it has entered the collective Adelaide consciousness (much like Westpac is still often referred to as either Santos or the State Bank building).

Here's hoping it gets up. :)
This.

Of course, after the Hills proposal on this site fell apart I'm really not left expecting this to happen. Don't get me wrong, I want this for the development of KWS southern skyline, it seems to need something of this height and calibre. The Optus building really does stick out like dog's balls.

Another big building or two like this, added with the <5 year old building near Gilles St hopefully will kick this area off. Entering into the city from any angle should be quite grand and welcoming. So far, it's quite lacklustre compared to the northern entrance.

Slenderman mentioned earlier that this would become the 6th tallest building in Adelaide if built? That's brilliant. :D

I was up at lofty on the weekend after a walk/run up the trail and looked at the southern end of KWS and remembered as a kid when it used to be just the Optus building in solitude. There's quite a nice collection of high rise there now. If this were to go ahead, Adelaide could be well on its way to having a second skyline.

Out of curiosity, when was the Optus building constructed?
Being born in '87 and not starting to appreciate skylines until about age 7 it was "always" there to me. I'm going to guess early 1990s

What is your obsession with building tall buildings in Adelaide?

We don't need anymore office or residential space, pre-existing sites barely manage fill up - let alone new buildings.

Is that sort of response really necessary?

If you can't be enthusiastic about tall buildings on a development forum, where can you be?

I'm unsure what you want to gain out of being on a development forum if you don't think we need development?

I Didn't say Patrick was against new developments but he does say that we don't need residential or commercial space as there's no demand
