Our road system is already clogged.

It's clogged because people don't use public transport enough.

Ironic, I know.

So big yes to creating routes that use faster roads.
Its congested not only because there isn't more public transport usage, but because the network is poorly designed, even the light sequences are ridiculous in parts. You have lights that turn green, and lead you a short distance (less then 100m) right into a red light. Ridiculous. Or lights that are green ahead, you get a green light, and by the time you get there, they're red.

Public transport is even more piss poor. There's very little convenience in using it for the majority.
Why would I go out of my way to find a train station in the suburbs, most of which have inadequate parking facilities, and then get off say in the city, and have to walk long distances? Ok you can catch a tram up the spine of the city, and then walk slightly shorter distances.
This is why we need a tram loop through the city and an underground rail loop, and why suburban train stations need proper parking facilities, proper links with other public transport such as buses, or trams.
A whole network that spans the whole metro area, that loops around via multiple interconnected modes, trains, trams and buses.
Similar to what happens up north, you get green light from Womma Road, once on Main North Road heading towards the City before you get to Elizabeth Way/Ifould Road you get a red light.

Still not really sure why they didn't put Regency either over or under the motorway instead of the other way around. It would have required a narrower overpass, and would have taken away yet another undulation on the motorway.

You still need to accommodate the actual intersection of South Road (Surface Roads) and Regency Road, which is much cheaper to accommodate at level than raising or lowering that intersection. There are also issues with access to local businesses, including a major commercial centre in the south-west corner.

If more money was allocated, they could have put the motorway into an extended trench surfacing to the north of Regency Road, but what they are building now is an acceptable outcome.

Also, one of Adelaide's critical gravity sewer mains runs down Regency Rd, with minimal grade (pretty much flat) and therefore minimal scope to realign. Not the only reason of course, but a contributor.

Plenty of markings on footpath, verge and road along South Road between Hilton and up to around Richmond Road.

Also spotted a large piling rig just off the road, west of the above.

I find the overpass looks similar setup as Emerson Overpass minus a railway crossing on the ground

Piling rig is doing the geotechnical exploration to determine soil conditions along the corridor.

Service locating and surveying of the corridor is also under way at the moment.

Hopefully they locate all the watermains and other underground services before someone else shows up with a geotechnical drill rig so they can avoid the services that are still active!

Major works in early January 2021

In early January 2021, the overpass centre spans will be transported from the Polonia Reserve compound to their final location, over Regency Road, using Self Propelled Modular Transporters.

To allow for these works to occur safely and efficiently, from 5am Monday, January 4, 2021 until 5am Monday, January 11, 2021, weather permitting, there will be a partial closure of the South Road and Regency Road intersection. At completion of the overpass installation, the South Road and Regency Road intersection will reopen.

Dedicated public viewing areas will be positioned on the east and west sides of the intersection for stakeholders to view the major works. Please register your interest with the R2P Alliance via email or phone call if you wish to view the works with project personnel in attendance to explain the works and answer questions. There will be limited spaces and changes are subject to COVID-19 restrictions.

For details on the January works, including the changes to traffic, bus routes and work scope, please visit our web page: https://r2palliance.com.au/project/late ... works-2021.
