News & Discussion: Adelaide Metro Trains
Re: News & Discussion: Adelaide Metro Trains
Good to see stations finally getting some upgrades. Torrens Park still misses out though, despite being one of the worst stations on the network.
Re: News & Discussion: Adelaide Metro Trains
Under or near the Jervois Bridge would be ideal as it would be close to attractions such as the Hart MillPeFe wrote: ↑Wed Jun 09, 2021 5:59 pmEthelton?.....Why even bother with this station! Why not rebuild Glanville a little further south and "delete" Ethelton.
Yes folks some sort of "master plan" is needed for each line but will we get one, I doubt it..vision is something that doesn't come naturally for South Australian governments when it comes to public transport.

Re: News & Discussion: Adelaide Metro Trains
Let's hope the station upgrades include pedestrian upgrades. Every station should have at least four entrances, one on each corner. The fewer entrances each station has, the longer it takes to walk to the platform and the fewer people take public transport. It doesn't matter how flashy the stations are if they are too hard to get to.
Re: News & Discussion: Adelaide Metro Trains
Added to the concerns about Ethelton/Glanville, why Woodlands Park? Surely now would be the time to look at rationalising the stations of Emerson/Edwardstown/Woodlands Park in advance of whatever mess becomes of the South Road upgrade. Although I note only $1.5 million is budgeted for this particular station so perhaps it's only bandaid works until something larger is considered.
Beyond that, I'm sick of these 10 year announcements. It's all well and good to let us know there's forward planning, but these announcements are designed to fluff the size of the commitment while funding remains on the never-never. In any event, $110 million over 10 years is a miniscule investment in public transport. Do more, do better.

You can't remove Glanville it provides access to Semaphore, it should be updated and renamed Semaphore or Semaphore Road.

It's also got a third track for terminating trains and storage.
In hindsight, the Outer Harbor line should be in the middle of Lefevre Peninsula. The current location of the line makes it a long walk from Semaphore Beach to Glanville.
If (when?) they remove the Semaphore Road level crossing, they could move the station closer to the intersection to reduce the walking distance.

It's literally a 50 metre walk. How much closer do you want to get...1NEEDS2POST wrote: ↑Fri Jun 11, 2021 7:05 pmIt's also got a third track for terminating trains and storage.

True, but there's an opportunity to improve access and pedestrian linkages.[Shuz] wrote:It's literally a 50 metre walk. How much closer do you want to get...1NEEDS2POST wrote: ↑Fri Jun 11, 2021 7:05 pmIt's also got a third track for terminating trains and storage.

Re: News & Discussion: Adelaide Metro Trains
It would seem electrification works have gone beyond Salisbury. Today I went out to Elizabeth Railway Station and found the signal at the end of the Gawler Bound platform is now a junction signal with a low speed caution head. I have attached photos to this post as well.
They have also done a variety of masts and portals between Elizabeth and Smithfield with some 1 track, twin-track cantilevers across at Womma, and about to be put in place at Broadmeadows.
They are also in the process of planting twin track cantilevers at Smithfield with heavy trucks stationed at Broadmeadows and Smithfield. Even the car park for Broadmeadows has been turned into a carpark for all the heavy vehicles with HV park signs all over.
Signals between Salisbury and North of Broadmeadows that have been planted and unmasked and waiting power. They are all in standing positions and all have tilt-masts setup as well.
They have also been busy with the elizabeth turnback track, they junctioned signal number 2671 and 2674 and what looks to be a signal has been planted down on the northern end of the turnback track, they might be doing a twin track gantry spanning over the main line for the junction signal, going by the footing in the pictures.
They have done the northern junction areas of the turnback track and the southern junctions but not the middle bit, could be because of the track work involved to connect the track to the main line.

Hilarious press conference! The jabs at Labor are pathetic. And the amount of money announced to “refresh” these stations is a pittance. We’ll be lucky to get a fresh coat of paint and new asphalt.Norman wrote: ↑Wed Jun 09, 2021 5:39 pmOK, here is the news. Thank GOD Ovingham is getting an upgrade, it would have been so embarrassing spending all this money on the Torrens Road overpass and leaving Ovingham Station as it is.
Also good to see Ethelton on that list, it looks like an embarrassment when you consider how much investment has been put in at New Port.
I don't get the jabs being thrown at Labor though. They are the ones who rebuilt the entire network and built stations such as Mawson Lakes, Adelaide Showgrounds and rebuilt many stations such as Elizabeth, Munno Para, Port Adelaide, Oaklands (twice in fact) and extended the line to Seaford and Flinders.
Besides, rail patronage increased during their period in office, the decline has only been more recent during the pandemic.

09/06/2021 | Steven Marshall MP | Corey Wingard MP | Better Services
Railway stations right across metropolitan Adelaide are set to receive much-needed makeovers as part of a $111 million commitment (over 10 years) from the Marshall Liberal Government in the 2021-22 State Budget ($66.4 million over the forward estimates).
Fifteen stations along the Gawler Line, as well as other stations across the network, will be upgraded providing a more enjoyable and safer journey for Adelaide train commuters and supporting 110 full time jobs at construction peak.
Premier Steven Marshall said the funding will help to encourage more people to leave their cars at home and catch public transport.
“We saw, under the former Labor government, public transport patronage dwindle to embarrassingly low levels,” Premier Marshall said.
“My government is getting on with delivering not only the long-awaited and much-anticipated electrification of the Gawler Line, but also desperately needed upgrades to our rail infrastructure.
“We know that if we can get more people onto our buses and trains it will help to ease traffic congestion on our roads and reduce the impacts on the environment.
“Our Budget for a stronger South Australia is creating jobs, building what matters and delivering better services to further secure our state’s growing global reputation as one of the safest and most attractive places in the world to live, work and raise a family.”
Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Corey Wingard, said the upgrade works will include new shelters, seating and bins, lighting upgrades, painting and landscaping.
“The stations on our train network were left to go to wrack and ruin under the former Labor government which no doubt had an impact on the number of South Australians using public transport,” Minister Wingard said.
“This investment in a Station Refresh program will complement the extensive cleaning blitz the new rail operator Keolis Downer has undertaken across the network.
“The Marshall Liberal Government was elected to deliver better services and that is why we’re investing in our public transport network - to deliver better and more frequent train services.”
Stations to be upgraded between 2021 and 2025 include:
- 14 stations along the Gawler Line ($20 million 50:50 with the Commonwealth Government)
- Ovingham Railway Station ($10 million) (also on the Gawler Line but funded separately)
- Woodlands Railway Station ($1.5 million)
- Ethelton Railway Station ($5 million)
- Adelaide Railway Station ($6.4 million)
- Goodwood Railway Station ($5 million)

Thanks for the photos! Not a fan of those hanging lights, which appear unnecessary anyway.

Re: News & Discussion: Adelaide Metro Trains
Looks AMAZING! The did a pretty good job matching the tiles and granite the best they could. The upward facing lights and downlights on the walls brighten up the ramp significantly.
I disagree, you need some kind of decent lighting in there especially when its overcast or the sun goes down. Andy's photos were taken at night and the ramp is still very well lit. Clever idea how they're shaped to play off of the curve of the ceiling (and the light points both up and down). Something with a bit of a 1920s flair might've been more appropriate for the character of the building, but it probably would've been a challenge and a bigger expense to design something heritage-inspired that 1) looks good and 2) makes as much light as those new pendants do.
