Hundreds of South Rd users have raised concerns about a spate of potential issues with the current designs for the last stage of the North-South Corridor.
The state government ran a three-month long “engagement campaign” to find out what South Rd users think of the Torrens to Darlington plans.
More than 3600 people responded to a survey, and more than 1300 punters were interviewed at shopping centres.
Nearly 600 people felt the current design proposals would not provide enough access points to both the planned northern and southern tunnels.
Of those 600, 204 respondents felt there needed to be more direct access from Cross Rd to the planned motorway.
More than 250 people said on and off ramps should be located on Sir Donald Bradman Drive for access to Adelaide Airport and the CBD, instead of ramps accessing Richmond Rd.
In its August 2021 community engagement report, the state government said more than 75 per cent of respondents felt positive about the Torrens to Darlington project – a 10.5km non-stop motorway that will be the biggest infrastructure project in the state’s history.
Nearly 240 respondents raised concerns about east-to-west access in and out of local areas.
“Many comments related specifically to Black Forest and Glandore, with key concerns relating to lack of access and egress options exacerbated by the rail and the tram lines, and connectivity between the two suburbs,” the report stated.
More than 120 respondents said there was not enough detail available on which houses, businesses or community facilities would be demolished to make way for the project.
About 100 people raised concerns about potential congestion issues on South Rd, above the planned tunnels, and on nearby roads such as Anzac Highway, Richmond Rd, Sir Donald Bradman Drive, Ashwin Parade and Grange and Henley Beach roads.
“In relation to South Rd, most expressed hope that traffic would decrease as a result of the project, with others concerned about bottlenecks at ramp entries and exits,” the report stated.
Sixty-two community members felt the proposed tunnels needed to be extended. Some suggested having one mega-tunnel tunnel instead, under the perception it would reduce the number of property acquisitions.
The state government last month revealed the first 64 properties to be demolished to make way for the project. The properties will be bulldozed so two massive Tunnel Boring Machines can be assembled on the western side of South Rd at Clovelly Park, in an area between Selgar Ave and Princes Parade.

Has anyone noticed that some of the signs on Regency to Pym are a bit weird?
If you have a look at Normans video, at 1:59 and 2:09, the green signs list the roads PYM ST, TORRENS RD and HAWKER ST. in all caps.

2.34 shows how i think should be listed with it like Port Rd

I thought the convention was that the text in teh white boxes is all caps, whilst the rest is normal capitalisation.

The bold letters are streets and the non bold are suburbs. I wish they would give better signs on the Northern Expressway: for example Heaslip Road should have Womma Road and Elizabeth under it. Curtis Road should have Munno Para.

The white text on green is clearly different to show 'roads'

Either Torrens to Torrens is wrong (and darlington --https://www.google.com/maps/@-35.009223 ... 2!1b1!2i28 ) or Regency to Pym is

The signs are a real mess with no uniformity between stages. Would be good if a system of exit numbers was designated to each on and off ramp, would be a lot easier to remember than trying to roll off a list of roads at each exit.

Probably best to number according to distance rather than by chronological increments to allow for future exits. Could do all future exits from West Therbarton Road heading north starting as N2, the Bolivar Road exit would N22, etc. Where you have two offramps one after another such as the exits from the NSM to Port River Expressway and Salisbury Highway, they would be labelled N10A and N10B.

Similar numbering south from Richmond Road (Exit S2).

Agree the exits should be numbered as suggested by AG. Makes logical sense.

I think there are two conversations going on here.

One is to do with their current system, they are inconsistant with road names when they are on the green part of the sign.

The other is to do with a potential future system, aligning the exists with a numbering system.

I believe that this numbering system will only come into action ONCE the whole corridor is complete.

The numbering system is just a suggestion by people on this site.
Its not going to happen.

New map reveals South Road tunnel’s impact on Clovelly Park properties

The path of the final North-South link has been revealed, as has the staggering amount of materials involved. More than 60 homes and businesses will be demolished.

The final stage of the North South Corridor project will feature twice the amount of steel used to create the Sydney Harbour Bridge and more than twice the concrete used in the world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai.

The state government has laid bare the sheer enormity of the project by revealing how much material will be going into the largest infrastructure project in the state’s history.

It comes as a new map is released showing more details about the first round of property acquisitions and what will be put in their place.

The government will on Wednesday outline for the first time exactly what it will require to deliver the $9.9 billion last stage of the North South Corridor at the 2021 Annual Construction Sector Industry Briefing.

The Advertiser can confirm the project will use 470,000 tonnes of asphalt; 760,000 cubic metres of concrete; 2 million tonnes of quarry products; 100,000 tonnes of steel; and 470,000 litres of bitumen.

It will also produce 8 million tonnes of spoil.

Dirt on the North-South corridor

Asphalt: 470,000 tonnes
Concrete: 760,000 cubic metres
Quarry products: 2 million tonnes
Steel: 100,000 tonnes
Bitumen: 470,000 litres
Spoil produced: 8 million tonnes


Infrastructure Minister Corey Wingard said the final stage would use a total of more than 3.5 million tonnes of material.

“To put the size of this project into perspective, the amount of steel needed is the equivalent of two Sydney Harbour Bridges,” he said.

“The amount of material that’s going to be needed is staggering and where practical we’ll try to source it locally which provides a great opportunity for SA businesses.”

Mr Wingard said the briefing would “give local firms the time to scale up their operations to be in the best place possible to be part of this huge project”.

Federal Urban Infrastructure Minister Paul Fletcher said when considering the volume of materials required to complete the final stage of the project – just 10.5km of the entire 78km corridor – “the scale of the broader project is all the more compelling”.

Meanwhile, the government has released a new map that shows further details about the first round of property acquisitions, in Clovelly Park, which will result in more than 60 homes and businesses being demolished.

Those affected have been notified by the Transport Department.

The map shows which properties will be demolished and what will be taking their place.

Among the new details, the map shows where cranes, grout and bentonite plants, a workshop area, a shower block, storeroom and gatehouse and traffic control facilities will be located.

Climbing and fitness gym Beyond Bouldering opened a new $1.3 million facility in Clovelly Park in July but soon discovered the business’s building was set for the wrecking ball.

Beyond Bouldering Clovelly Park manager Alice Dixon said the gym had been told it had until late November 2022 to vacate the building.

“The gym itself is stunning and so much money has gone into it – It was really tough news,” she said.

Ms Dixon said the hunt was now on to find a new premises for the gym.

The Advertiser reported on Saturday that work is underway to relocate electricity and phone services in Clovelly Park as part of the project.

Under an $85 million package of “early works,” SA Power Networks cabling and Optus telecommunications services are being moved to clear the way for the project’s southern tunnel, launch site and staging area.

Major construction of the project is expected to start in late 2023.

The final section of the North-South Corridor will be rolled out in two stages.

Stage one involves the construction of a motorway from Darlington to Anzac Highway, including a 4km tunnel.

The second stage will involve motorways from the Gallipoli Underpass to Sir Donald Bradman Drive and from West Thebarton Rd to the Torrens to Torrens section of the project.

A 4km tunnel is also included in the stage.

Once completed, the upgrade will create a 78km non-stop motorway from Gawler to Old Noarlunga, allowing drivers to bypass 21 sets of traffic lights and saving 24 minutes in travel time.

So that red line starting at Princes Pde follows Yorke Ave all the way down, meaning everything between Yorke and South will be demolished. South of that where the section gets fatter, it includes the Tonsley Hotel and U-Store-It, and looks like it's going to extend as far as knocking down the old sawtooth at the front of the Mistubishi site, with the only survivor the Highgate Healthcare building behind the Jarvis Toyota. Seems like probably no changes to the western side of South.
