Good riddens, shame the Hilton and it's ugly sister across the road isn't also getting demolished.
Great photos btw

Thanks - it's quite a milestone when an ugly, yet memory-filled building disappears. I hope to get some interesting shots of the construction phase in the coming years.
When an interesting photo presents itself, I say get the shot because you may never see it again.

Great to see it go, agree.
I do fear though that the upmarket nature of the new Arcade interior will be a bad match for the Central Market, however. I hope they get this right.

Slightly off-topic, but it would be great if both the Hilton and Intercontinental underwent some major facelifts. Both are really showing their age these days, especially as modern buildings are built up around them.
Back on topic, how good is it to see the old arcade demolished. Many were casting doubts on the project when the City Council were delaying demo works.

Today's progress:
Maybe having such a high-end development will put pressure on surrounding property owners to increase the general aesthetic standards of the precinct.

I
like the Hilton
Intercontinental is fine too, but could do with work to the ground level plaza out front and the area out the back connecting to the riverbank.

I don't think there's much that could be done without spending a fortune to upgrade both the Hilton and GHD that would improve the visual impact they have on Victoria Square.
A lot better deserves to be in their place in 2023 and beyond.

I actually like the Hilton and Intercontinental as is. The architecture reflects their time very well. Give it a bit more time and they will be appreciated.

The Hilton needs more happening around it at street level, the entire Grote Street frontage is wasted by a service vehicle entry and a side entrance stairwell usually occupied by rough sleepers. Also their signage is incredibly dated and need replacement.
Pretty much the same for InterContinental, terrible ground level activation and the signage is completely offensive to the buildings design.

rough sleepers? is this the PC term for homeless people?
that isn't the fault of the Hilton building...we have them breaking into our building on regular basis
