[U/C] Re: #APP: Former LeCornu Redevelopment | 20m | 6lvls | Mixed Use
Here's the text of a strange invitation that turned up at my place. Damned if I know what it's about...
Minister Paul and the Major Developments Panel present
‘I Do Declare!’
or
‘How Cheaply Are We Bought’
The final episode (perhaps) of
Adelaide’s longest-running redevelopment soapie
“The Le Cornu Saga”
a tawdry tale of failed urban design
see naked political expedience, bald cynicism and dodgy design!
all singing, all dancing!
including
small-town politics, consultants and extreme statutory interpretation
excluding
good planning practice, community consideration and third party appeal rights
and featuring
fistfuls of cash ($261,000 at last count)!
in order of appearance
Chair Man Lance
Vince and ‘Old Joe’
The Late ‘Matinee’ Bob
Con the Generous
and introducing…
‘Laughing Boy’ Ross as the ‘Poor Little Rich Kid’
Amazing vanishing act by fading silent star J-Lo and walk-off role by ‘Too Ginger Mick’
Behind the scenes – Big Theo
Special Non-Appearance by – Adelaide City Council Development Assessment Panel
Greek Chorus – SA Heritage Branch & Royal Australian Institute of Architects (soprano)
Direction and Timing - Media Mike and the Back Room Boys
Support Act - Misguided Marty and the Uninformed Opposition
Foley Operator – Himself
Ticket price – Whatever you think will be sufficient (usual drop-off, marked ‘Donation’)

Seriously, can those who dislike the design of this building and/or how it gained it's approval [and they are entitled to their opinion], please put up some images of buildings which they believe would have complied with the development plan AND which they would have preferred to be built here.
While it is very easy to criticise, why not put up some alternatives so we can judge for ourselves the merit of your argument.

Actually i think that all of those opposed to this development should find themselves another hobby (ie Get a Life) now that this has been approved. I'm not really interested in hearing about what should be, could be, wanted to be..... I just want to see this one go up so that we can finally move on from a saga that has been a thorn in Adelaide's side for too long!

To those complaining about it it's done, you lost, get over it.
It's been approved, that means it's going to be built so all the complaining in the world won't change an inevitable outcome. Move on and find something else to complain about, as i'm sure you will (that's what you do).

Well, what with all the global financial turmoil happening at the moment wouldn't it be just a laugh if the developers couldn't go ahead with this one.
Never say never. The saga still continues...

Is Anne Moran still a councilor?
[U/C] Re: #APP: Former LeCornu Redevelopment | 20m | 6lvls | Mixed Use
yep, i was thinking the same thing - could quite feasibly be one or more years before construction starts...Shuz wrote:Well, what with all the global financial turmoil happening at the moment wouldn't it be just a laugh if the developers couldn't go ahead with this one.

Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.

Kiwi Architecture Firm Gets The Go Ahead For $100m Luxury Development
11 NOVEMBER 2008 - Ignite Architects has had 88 O'Connell Street, a major project in North Adelaide approved for construction by the South Australian Government.
Ignite Architects managing director, Jeremy Whelan says the $100m Makris Group development will be a signature project for the New Zealand based firm.
"We won the work for our unique design and understanding of the site, applying learnings from local projects that the other competitors failed to solve. This is a significant project for Ignite which we will be running out of our Auckland and Sydney offices," he says.
The mixed use residential and retail streetscape design is a new concept for Adelaide and is expected to attract tourists and new residential apartment owners to the area with its high end retail offering.
The O'Connell Street site has languished as a vacant lot for the past 20 years and will soon boast an 8,000 square metre six story retail street scape with 52 high quality apartments, to be valued between $1.5 and $4m each.
Ignite Architects has been involved in this project with Makris Group for four years, negotiating with local council for development approvals. Approvals failed after three years of negotiations due to council rejecting its own proposed planning rules change and the Makris Group applied to have the O'Connell Street development declared a major project by the State Government.
Major project development status was awarded in May 2007 and allowed the developer to deal directly with the Department of Planning, overriding local council. State Government gave final approval to Makris Group for its development in September 2008.
Ignite is now progressing with delivery of the proposal, developing the design and documentation to comply with state regulations, over the next 12 months. Ignite will also oversee construction, which is planned to be completed within three years.
This mixed use development will be resourced across the retail and residential teams at Ignite Architects and will be project managed by Jeremy Whelan, managing director and Peter Harrison, director who leads Ignite's Sydney office.
The project is part of Ignite's long term strategy to connect with clients on both sides of the Tasman.

This is so exciting, i gather it will be another 12 months though before anything gets started. Thats ok as long as we go full steam ahead.

Very encouraged to see this is not as casualty of the financial crisis - I was beginning to wonder about this.

Article in the Messenger mentions this won't start until atleast 2010.
[U/C] Re: #APP: Former LeCornu Redevelopment | 20m | 6lvls | Mixed Use
The same article also goes onto say that if it was under construction they may be a little worried because of the GFC. But they are stil going to "forge ahead and the place will still be built" They also go onto say that demolition of the existing buildings onsite will more than likley happen this year.
So overall, some resonably positive news
