All this ongoing fuss in the media about moving the malls balls. Something is seriously wrong when Sandy Wilkinson pops his head up to formally protest about such inane matters. Sells papers I suppose.
How wide is rundle mall? It's gotta be something like 15-18 metres or so. Look back a few posts at that old postcard of the mall. You can clearly see the balls. Take 3 large steps to the side and that's the extent of the move. Still clearly visible up and down the mall. Storm in a teacup.

The scary thing is this encouragement of "public opinion" vs "the elitist architects" (even more baffling given than Wilkinson is an architect). Apparently everyone is an expert, and their opinion is more important than the people engaged (and qualified) to do the job. Opinion that is informed by selective newspaper reporting, the ranting of two rogue councillors, and without looking at the publicly available masterplan.

I bet we don't even get palm trees in Rundle Mall after all this fuss and palava. Incredible!

Well, the balls are
officially moving.
No mention of the cable car up to Mt Lofty, though.

Ive noticed that outside of General Pants, they had dug up a part of the Mall presumably for service works. However, the pavers which they have put back in place appears to be the new ones, not the old ones or slab of asphalt (as the ACC often does for a quick fix). It looks quite stylish.

I think they're test patches. There's a slight difference between the two squares, so I assume they laid them out to help them make a choice. I'm not much of a fan of the olive colour, but either choice is a big improvement on what we've got.

The paving is supposed to be two tone, so maybe that's why.

That's why the patches look different?
If you look closely (not too sure how or why I noticed it at a glance), from memory, one patch has an exposed aggregate running through the grey colour with a flat olive and the other has an exposed aggregate running through the olive with a flat grey. I'd say they're deciding which way they want to go. I think the exposed aggregate grey looks better fwiw.

Why not use both types of paver and create interesting patterns with them.

A cable car up to Mt Lofty would certainly be brilliant, but what's that got to do with Rundle mall? Surely they're not planning to have a cable car from Rundle Mall to Mt Lofty are they? Doesn't sound very possible to me!

Well to me it goes without saying that an open mall of this type needs Palm trees along it. They add enormously to the aesthetic appeal of such malls. Yet for some reason Adelaide council insists on just putting in really plain looking trees.

Like 99.5% of your posts... No just no.
Nothing wrong with plane trees, they look lush and provide lots of shelter during summer. Palm trees suit beachside suburbs.

+1 on plane trees
-1 on palm trees
The mall isn't a tropical resort.
