I blame it on Mike Rann.

The current RAH site is next to the East End precinct, Rundle Street has numerous pubs and a couple clubs and plenty of drunks. There is also a pub right across the road from the RAH, and PJ Obriens etc right around the side to that. It's never been an issue, so why would be an issue on the other end of North Terrace?

I'd say the main interaction between the present RAH and the East End pubs is that the pubs benefit greatly from being near the 9,000 (? - IIRC) employees of the RAH. It would be the same for the West End pubs if the hospital moved there. I managed the East End business association for a couple of years and I know the huge economic value of the hospital's staff and visitors to the East End. The continual presence of shift workers moving through the East End is also an important factor in 'keeping things nice' down there. Depending on what use is made of the remnant buildings of the RAH if the hospital is moved, the character of the East End could change considerably. Whatever the use might be, it won't involve the thousands of people who use the buildings now.

The Advertiser has been throwing around the term 'world class' for decades now. I have newspaper articles from the 90's which are littered with the term.

It's a valid argument because it's true actually. There are plenty of people who hold some pretty dated and defeatist attitudes when it comes to Adelaide and South Australia.

It's not an Adelaide thing, it's not an Aussie thing, it happens all over the World. I read similar forums and comments pages from all over the place. And I'd challenge anyone to work out where the posts were talking about if all references to place names were removed.

I see the same discussions of "Iconic", "World class", "NIMBYs", "grass is always greener", "I'll have what she's having" "wont someone think of the children" and so on in every public discussion I've visited.

I predict that if ostraya doesnt win the 2022 world cup bid this thing will get shelved because of a lack of business case

we'll still have phase 1 though

Just over a month to go yet before the August 31st deadline.

I don't feel confident that it will go ahead. The SANFL and SACA are both very selfish organizations. It's hard to see the two coming to a compromise resolution; and it seems that the overwhelming majority of SACA members are set to block the proposal anyway.

Im not sure if your a member or not (Ill guess not), but the presentation to the members about a month ago was very impressive and the business case was very strong. Not at one time during the meeting was the world cup bid bought up. This is a non issue in regards to proceeding with the development. There were concerns with certain aspects of the development with the members but things such as the carparking will be addressed in the final proposal. Other issues like loosing the view from the the members stand to the parklands to the west and drop in pitches were pretty much ridiculed by all but a small minority. If the proposal is comprehensive enough it will be passed for one reason, more money for the SACA.

its great for SACA members and the SACA...the issue is the lack of business case for the half billion dollars in government funds...as well as the compensation the SANFL are demanding
this is not the SACA's money...dont pretend that it is

If Rann, Foley and co decide that there is not much upside for them in pushing for 'phase 2' to be built, or if it otherwise becomes clear that the government could score points by withdrawing funding, they could probably find a way before everything is signed off. If there is a second dip of GFCV, for example, and in any case, that half billion must be looking very tempting as tactical expenditure to government members in marginal seats. A cynic might say that the scheme has done its job - it helped get the ALP over the line at the March 2010 election.

Should be interesting to see what happens at the Federal election with Kate Ellis being the sitting member for Adelaide, incidently being held before the 31st August deadline.

I still find it hard to imagine 15000 people fitting in that stand...considering thats the capacity of Hindmarsh, it just doesnt look that big
