Yes they are, and that's why I wouldn't suggest that we build an Eiffel Tower or an Empire State Building in Adelaide.

What was your point?

As stated above, a restaurant with a view, or similar in an building with a use is good. But a folly of a tower with zero use other than the occasional tourist in a low tourism place like Adelaide would end up costing us money and eventually be abandoned and run down.

I always make sure I visit places like this when I travel.
It just needs to be a nice restaurant with a good view of the burbs and hills.

I've just been to Auckland in New Zealand and really if you took away that giant tower, there's nothing really unique about their CBD.. Our shops, and ease or walking around makes out CBD so much better. But it's that tower that brings tourist and people into the city and is a focal point for the entire CBD.

If you're the type of person who goes looking for those touristy towers, then yeah, Aukland has one, but it also has a fantastic mix of archetecture, a much denser CBD than we have, a beautiful and busy waterfont right at the edge of the CBD, 27 (extinct)volcanoes, a harbour bridge (either the last or the highest of it's kind ever built - I forget which right now), freeways from the northern and southern suburbs to the edge of the CBD ....

Sorry, but I think our CBD has some way to go before we should start comparing it to Aukland.

And then there's Christchurch. New Zealanders compare Christchurch to Adelaide. When I got to Christchurch, I nearly cried for poor old Adelaide - Christchurch is so much like Adelaide, and is easily New Zealand's most boring city!

We do? Where is that? The only Ferris wheel I've seen in Glenelg is the tiny little kiddie one outside the Beachhouse. I really must go and take a good look around!

As for the comment about attracting the occasional tourist in a low tourism place like Adelaide, well isn't that how you make Adelaide a higher tourism place, by building some attractions? Obviously a big tower by itself wouldn't do much, but you have to start somewhere!

My point is that that a high viewing point - no matter whether it is a 100 year old design - will attract people. I don't know of any place in the Adelaide CBD where the public can get easy access to a good view (you are hardly encouraged to get to the top in the Westpac building and I don't think many tourists would find it anyway). I agree that public money should not be used to build some kind of observation tower. What can be done however, is to encourage developers to include areas where the public can get access to great views (e.g. a restaurant) in return for something else (e.g. extra height for the development).

One last post of irrelevance. The best views over Adelaide that you can get is from Windy Point Restaurant. They really are quite spectacular, one of the city's most underrated places I believe. We don't need an observation tower in the city when we've got Windy Point. Perhaps they could just expand the viewing platform west of the cafe/restaurant where the carpark is.

Err I thought all the structures were being bulldozed to have a clear path right in the middle?.

Well if that's the case that building is modern and better than the current hideous and cramped building. Plus it's a good location as there is already the State Visitor Centre on North Terrace and plans for one at the Riverbank Precinct and Victoria Square. Unless I'm thinking of something else?

Plug-in outlets a boost for Rundle Mall

RESTAURANTS, cafes and bars will plug-in and pop-up along Rundle Mall to inject moveable life throughout the shopping strip.

Under the new concept, called "plug and play", food and beverage outlets will come into the Mall for a set time and change as day turns to night, helping to support shops during late-night trading.

Rundle Mall Management Authority chairman Theo Maras said mobile outlets would better cater to customers' changing needs throughout the day.

"They come in with their cart and it's plugged in and they've got their trays of pre-cooked food that can be kept warm or a hotplate with a gas bottle to cook up fresh food," he said.

"One I've been talking to will do a one-day fixed menu where they'll have Black Angus beef with locally-sourced vegetables served on a plate and you can sit down and eat with a glass of beer or South Australian wine.

"There will be different gourmet shops who will serve but they won't be big, they won't be able to cater for 100 people.

"They'll cater for 25 to 30 people, maybe a little bit more at a time but there will be several of them.

"Vendors that served during the day that don't want to be there at night will take their gear and go, then someone else comes in, plugs in and serves."

The concept will be rolled out towards the end of next year once the $30 million upgrade of Rundle Mall is completed.

Mr Maras said in SA there were plenty of high-quality mobile food places, especially since the food van revolution.

About half a dozen restaurant-style vendors had already approached the authority, as well as ice cream, high tea, gourmet cakes and sweets vendors, he said.

as far as I knew, the Pulteney Street end outdoor restaurant didn't want to close, so why did they get forced out considering the redevelopment wont start for for another 2 years. You would surely leave things during our busiest time of the year - late Feb & march.

Does'nt make any sense
